And last but not least, turn demos into full games and get the things you didn't pay for for free...are we gonna gloss over that part? It's still a bad thing.

Reading, an overrated skill?

PS3MFW allows you to turn Demo PS3 consoles into regular PS3s. You know, those consoles that are used in stores to demonstrate PS3. If you happen to buy one, PS3MFW makes it usable.

Why would you buy one?

They sometimes pop up for sale cheaply, used of course. I certainly wouldn't buy a used demo-unit that has been running for thousands of hours in some store, but whatever. Anyway, how about admitting you jumped the gun with your first reply?

I thought that went without saying but whatever, I should also point out there are better ways to point out someone made a mistake than saying "reading is an overrated skill." IMO, that's unnecessary, making personal attacks doesn't make your arguements stronger, just makes you look out of source.

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

Yeah, sorry. But your response was the typical kind of the kneejerk reaction you see a lot on vgchartz, shoot first, ask questions later. Or rather. reply first, then read the opening post (if at all).

So could this be part of the reason why the PS3 has been outselling the Xbox 360?

I am certain that stuff like PS3MFW helps hardware sales, both to new and existing users. I've seen it mentioned quite a few times that people interested in PS3 homebrew buy secondary PS3s, just for that, and keep using their primary PS3s for PSN.

Excellent stuff.

Considering I know have a pretty much useless PS3 in the house that has trouble even running BDs I will now mod it.

I also love how so many hate on Homebrew and act like it is the same as piracy, or that it is bad because it could lead to piracy.

Almost anything in life can lead to something bad people. Let us all play this ridiculous game and just ban and/or hate on everything!

Seriously, some people on this site need to do some research because threads like this expose so much ignorance when it comes to the homebrew scene.

Piracy hasn't killed the PSP, DS, PS2, PS1, Wii, 360, etc... and now all of a sudden the PS3 is hacked and everything is going fucking apeshit.

It could actually be argued that piracy helps. There are, believe it or not, companies out there that leak their own titles to build up hype and interest in their products.

Not just that; piracy often has the effect of making people interested in something, and causes them to buy the real thing, or sequel. Additionaly, there are many people who only buy a system once it's been hacked. So as long as the hardware isn't sold at a loss, companies profit from this. And even if they pirate most of their games, they do buy an occasional title.

Something to ponder: Software sales haven't dropped at all since PS3 was jailbroken 7 months ago. On the contrary. Hard- and software sales have increased. Please explain this.

It's not that we think all homebrew is bad and leads to piracy, it's just that most (not all) people that say they do something only for homebrew are talking out their ass.

So everyone should turn threads like this into arguments because they assume that most people who say do it for homebrew could be lying?

Sounds about right because that is usually what I experience here whenever I speak about homebrew and claim that I use it on my Wii, DS and PSP.

It is possible to have alternate discussions on the subject too you know instead of people quickly just grabbing their pitchforks and torches and going after the topic creators or the topic of discussion. You do also realize that most (not all) people who attack homebrew are completely ignorant about the thing they are trying to attack?

The Android phone OS easily shows why the homebrew scene is so great. Many of those people do not support it for piracy, because quite frankly it is not required seeing as how Android gives the option of "Install non-market apps". Check the new Amazon app store to see what I mean, "Install non-market apps" is required to install what you purchase from there.

Some phones, like my Captivate for example, are known to have some pretty shitty support from the hardware manufacturer and the scene is what makes the phone actually quite great.

@Kyliedog

That means what? Do you know that most movie torrents are .avi files?

I guess SONY should pull support for those file types too huh?

Taht doesnt mean that piracy is ok nor does it mean that Sony should not fight it with all their might, they have all the right too.

you can try to justify piracy all you want but its still stealing. And Sony should and has every right to try to foight anything that couls lead to piracy, whcih includes protecting the ps3 from hackers.

too bad only a tiny percentage of people will use this because theres no online.

the real hackers just want to pirate and cheat and this will prove it when hardly anyone shows interest towards it (compared to interest shown against piracy)

Alright, alright.

Let's remove .avi support, it is the most used file type for movie torrents.

Let's remove media server because even if we don't have .MKV support, we could still stream it from PCs that do have support.

Let's remove .mp3 support because well, .mp3 are heavily pirated.

Let's remove game sharing, because you know what, me letting you and 3-4 others download my stuff is just as bad as me making a copy of my stuff and letting you download it.

The list can go on, but the fact is that my point isn't about saying that piracy doesn't have a lot of negatives. I am arguing that just because something can be used for piracy isn't necessarily a reason to get rid of it or not support it all together because if so then we wouldn't have many of the features we enjoy on our consoles.
