Sony Telling People The PSP2 Is As Powerful As A PS3

A report on trade site MCV reckons Sony has been telling "licensees" — ie the people making games for it — that the PSP2 "‘is as powerful as the PlayStation 3".

It's part of a clear strategy Sony has for the upcoming (and still not yet officially unveiled) handheld, which is that it's "specifically requesting richer, more in-depth content to differentiate its device from app-centric Apple and Android devices."

Like its own PlayStation Phone, for example.

The same report claims that while downloads will play a big part in the system's game library, the PSP2 will also use physical media so that its games can be sold in retail stores. It also states the handheld will be out in Q4 2011, possibly as early as October.

There's even word it may include some kind of phone (remember, the current PSP can be used as a Skype device), though "not as a primary function".

Before you spit internet coffee all over yourself, remember the PSP2 probably won't actually be as powerful as a PS3. But on a smaller screen, it should manage — just like the PSP did with the PS2 — to appear as though it's pretty close.

Kotaku is following up with Sony and will update should the company comment.

I said that the biggest motive PSP2 can't beat 3DS is that Sony is even more stupid than Nintendo. I guess they couldn't wait two days to proove that.

Um, I don't know who was clamoring for that, but they obvously forgot that having a hardware generation skipped with the first PSP was not ideal.

And will it be cost efficient? If all those specs are not at a reasonable level, then the system will cost even more than the 3DS and/or Sony will have to sell it at a loss. And that's not even getting into the battery life.

As for my own feelings, I'd rather see about the games than the specs (for example, hearing about a new Paper Mario and Kingdom Hears on the 3DS interested me far more than the specs for that system). Actually, there is one spec I would like to know, which is if it at least has backwards compatibility, including a legacy UMD drive (even if it uses a different medium for its own games).



A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

I will believe when I see it. Sony PR/executives always talk out of their ass. I still remember all the stupid garbage they tried to claim as truth in regards to both PS2 & PS3. I have no doubt it will look better than PSP but to be as nice looking as PS3...very doubtful. Are they goign to try selling a handheld that cost around $400 or what? 

Realistiscally, this new handheld would likely be around as powerful as either the Wii or Xbox. Which would be quite impressive tbh but PS3...thats just pure PS BS.



 How our favorite systems are just like humans and sometimes have issues finding their special someone...

Xbox 360 wants to Kinect &  PS3 wants to Move!  Why are both systems having such relationship problems?  The reason is they both become so infactuated with desire while watching the Wii as it waggles on by. They simply want what they can't have.

Why would it be BS? I am not a Sony proponent, and I don't understand much about the technical aspects, but wouldn't you need much less processing power to have PS3 like graphics when the screen is that much smaller?

How do you know it's going to cost 350-400$?A PS3 is cheaper than 300$ to produce,and it also has a blu-ray built-in.

300$ seems about right for a start.If it will be more expensive than that,it will see a price-cut very soon after it's release.
