Forums - Gaming Discussion - DLC and Bioware, what they did wrong

I love the Mass Effect series, but I refuse to buy DLC except in very rare circumstances. I own both Mass Effect games on steam, but have a pirated version of ME2 installed so I can play the dlc for free. I like that there is new content for games I like, but I feel that this content is never substantial enough to cost extra money. An hour or two of content for $10 is not nearly substantial enough.

So if you want to ask me what they did wrong, they are charging money for content that should be included with the price of the game. Unless they are adding a large amount of content, DLC is a very effective way to nickel and dime consumers.

DLC, for the most part, is content made after the game was released.  So if they included all possible DLC with the game then it would never come out.

What about the Fallout 3 DLC?  That content was 10 each and they all lasted about 6-8 hours each.  Almost the length of an average game now a days.  I think DLC is a good way to continue to support a game with additional story/gameplay after a game is released and if done right is worth every penny.

6-8 hours each? Hell no. They're 1 or 2 hours at best unless you're a real slowpoke. The only non-linear one is Point Lookout.

I said should be included with the price of the game, this doesn't necessarily mean it's included when you buy the game as it may not be created yet. Basically, buying the game new should entitle you to all DLC created for that title for free.

>_> I dunno, I just don't think they should bundle it in DLC.... because they don't give dialogue for all the other ones.

But saying the should include the extra content free after the game was released is a bit much too ask... especially when the original game was complete has more content than most games anyways. How many games give you substantial free stuff after it is already released? meaning voiced over dialogue etc. Like I mean... you can get mods on PC... but that isn't made by the original company

But that doesn't mean, In my opinion atleast. That I think we should get gouged... no. I think they should create a more substantial expansion together. that way all the dialogue from other characters can be voiced. And bioware get's money for creating a more substantial complete add-on.

I don't thinkit's bioware but  EA forcing multiple dlc. dragon age dlc comes in to over 100 dollars that's bullshit.

I see, so basically there would be no incentive for the developer to create more content...

No, I think the way it is set up now is better.  Because more developers are supporting their games longer with additional DLC than ever before.  The only thing they might do is decrease the price, or make the DLC packs bigger.  Honestly, with development costs as they are today, most deverlopers don't even make back the money they invest in the game, and you want them to give you even more for free?  for shame.

They first Should offer the complete full experience and add everything onto the disk if Done

then down the track if DLC is wanted by the fans then they should do that.

Of Course That's Just My Opinion, I Could Be Wrong

Alright my last reply was probably briefer than it should of been. I just wanted to give my perspective without going on a DLC rant. I'll try to keep this as short as possible.

When I said future DLC should be included in the purchase price, it really should be unless it's substantive content. When Mass Effect 2 is a 20-30 hour game at ~$50, trying to sling me extra 1-2 hour episodes for $10 is not a very good value for my money. This obviously varies from person to person, and yes, creating extra content costs money. At the same time though, providing new game content for free is a great way to sell new copies of your game while giving existing customers something extra. This is especially true when ME2 requires a network activation to even purchase DLC, thereby requiring any DLC user to buy the game new or pay for an activation code. In the case of Shadow Broker, perhaps giving that away for free would be a good way to entice people to pick up ME3?

I don't think DLC is inherently bad it's just been so badly abused this gen that I don't trust most publishers and developers to relent on their newfound position of offering as little content for as much money as possible. I like that they support their games with extra content, I don't like that the popular model for doing this is to take advantage of the desire of fans to consume more content.

I have said multiple times in previous comments that Bioware in 2010 is at a far better place than Blizzard was in 1998. Bioware has more successful franchises with rabid fanbases to make games for and like Blizzard, has a reputation for sterling quality games.

The DLC for Dragon Age is terribad. Absolutely atrocious. I love Dragon Age and have played through the campaign 3 times now, but I have never once been inspired by any of the Dragon Age DLC to put money down on it.

The only 3 games where I have paid for DLC are: Fallout 3, Grand Theft Auto 4, and Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

The bar for DLC that is better than the original game is The Lost and the Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony. I can spend hours in each DLC, but not nearly as much in the original GTA 4.

I like the fact that Bioware releases new DLC for ME2 and dont mind paying the money.  Each mission is worth it in my opinion. Even the weapon packs. The only thing I wont pay for are the armor and alternate costumes. Those really dont enhance the gameplay for me.

The one downside is that the DLC missions are short. But because the production value is high I can accept that.

I never played Dragon Age so I cant comment on that game. But Im a a huge ME fan. For me to have to wait until ME3 to come out until I can get more of my Shepard fix, well that would suck. The DLC is a good way to please fans in the meantime IMO.
