According to reports on IGN, Shuhei Yoshida (the president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios) has said that the company is at last making a profit on every PlayStation 3 sold. "This year is the first time that we are able to cover the cost of the PlayStation 3," Yoshida announced. He clarified that "we aren't making huge money from hardware, but we aren't bleeding like we used to."

This is big news for Sony, as the company should finally be able to turn a substantial profit with the PlayStation 3. It is estimated that the PlayStation 3 has accounted for losses of $4-7 billion since release in late 2006 (though some of these costs are attributable to pre-release research and development work). The newly profitable PS3 can be attributed to the release of a new model in May 2010, which sports a smaller (and subsequently more cost-effective) graphics chip.

Interesting stuff! It's about time that Sony started making some profit on hardware.

Good news! Hopefully they can make some of that back.

And yet they still lose money most quarters.  There has to be something in that division besides the ps3 that has been really hurting them these last two quarters.  It may be the Network, but can costs really be that high?

Sony PlayStation 3 already made history 4 years as the longest running console that is hack & piracy free.

And this fact is a new hope for the video games industry.

The strong yen is going to make Sony bleed even more.

They are probably $50-100 under where they intended to be in terms of price for almost all of the generation. If they hadn't been forced to make the desperate [price cut they did they probably would have achieved profitability year 2 or so.

yes they could lose on PSN because of bandwidth costs

but mainly on PSN since they were losing on previous units

they began profiting on PS3 SLIM production since JAN 2010 under $10 and now more after 40nm RSX

not anymore

yen has been bad  for atleast 2.5 years now

they are profiting with strong YEN since JAN this year so if conditions improve they will profit more
