Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Sony's Hirai: Naked eye 3d tech for portables does not have high precision.

Sony Computer Entertainment worldwide boss Kaz Hirai has claimed that the sort of technology used in Nintendo's 3DS is imprecise.

Speaking to Sankei Biz in Japan, Hirai said that based on Sony's own research, "naked eye 3D for portables" does "not have high precision".

However, Hirai was careful not to comment on the 3DS itself - which he said he had not seen.

He was unsurprisingly a little more positive about Sony's stereoscopic 3D push.

"With such things as a strengthened 3D-compatible software lineup, we aim to increase hardware sales," said Hirai of the console.

We can't say that we share Hirai's pessimism over 'naked eye 3D technology - as our Nintendo 3DS review shows.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

Oh yeah!?! Well, um... his FACE doesn't have high precision!

Harharhar, I told him >:D

This could easily mean "We have been looking into doing this ourselves, but we do not think it is "there" yet"

I do like how he made it a point to say he has not seen the 3DS.

As always, there is a very large difference between what a general consumer wants and what a videophile wants; and I think Sony has been focused on the videophile to the extent that they’re completely missing what the general consumer wants.

That's actually an improvement over the usual Sony spiel. He talks up Sony's product while not directly taking a shot a the 3DS. If only John Koller and Jack Tretton could learn how to do this. They wouldn't have persistent case of foot in mouth syndrome.

I hope the general consumer likes to waste their money.

Hirai really needs to read all the glowing impressions people have had for the 3DS

How does he know it's imprecise. He has'nt seen it yet. lol

I would say that both sides of this would see the other’s approach as wasting money. Basically, for someone who is happy with DVD and is paying $5 per movie and $30 for a player a $300 Blu-Ray player and $35 is wasting money; at the same time the videophile would see throwing $5 for a movie that is obsolete as throwing their money away.

He says the technology is imprecise based on their own research, but he doesn't comment on the 3DS specifically, because he hasn't seen it.
