Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Could anyone really kill Nintendo?

Nothing is impossible. The problem is that nobody quite has a handle on the games industry like Nintendo does. Even through the PS1 and PS2, Sony's goals in the game industry were such that they really couldn't run Nintendo out. To run out Nintendo hardware, you basically have to make Nintendo software irrelevant, which was never the case even in the darkest days of the GameCube.

Nintendo could destroy themselves if they let their software quality slide, easily, but otherwise it would take a foe really dedicated to 1-upping Nintendo at their own game.

Only company that ever came close to that was Sega, no other company can match Nintendo in software

And the MASSIVE amount of Nintendo confidence continues. People on here are really on a tear about the 3DS this and the 3DS that. You would think this was the second coming or something. Sony had the highest selling video game system ever in the PS2 and had over 100 million sellers. They were unstopable coming into this generation and got out to a slow start. The PS1 and PS2 won their generations and now Sony is losing this generation. Things change.

People should wait before they signal the 3DS the king.

No one is unbeatable.

The major difference here is, most Sony systems did not sell due to their own games. They largely sold due to third parties (the PS2 and PSP, anyway). Nintendo has shown it can carry a system almost entirely by itself, so if third parties support them, how can anyone compete?

Even if Nintendo's next few consoles somehow end up constantly declining in sales, it should take a very long time (over 10, 15 years) for them to start becoming irrelevant...

yeah they can atleast survive 2 more gens without making profit with the money currently stored

If Sony had released the PS3 at $299 with good games like GT5, FF13 (exclusive), Killzone 2, LBP, and maybe a couple others then Nintendo would be dead right now. Of course looking back that is obvious.

I think next gen Sony could go back to domination. If they release a well priced console with a great launch lineup, 3D, motion controls, blu-ray player, and the best graphics then I think Sony could not kill but dominate Nintendo.

Nintendo is the only gaming company that will last the test of time. Sony and Microsoft will die, just like Atari and Sega did. It's already beginning to show. Sony and MS are making motion controls to keep up with Nintendo, but they're barely keeping up. Nintendo is always at least one step ahead, if not in technology then in innovation.

Microsoft is showing it the worst. With the loss of Bungie they're in deep shit. They haven't got many great first-party developers. They've almost completely abandoned PC gamers like myself, though Fable 3 is a nice addition to the list of exclusives that the 360 doesn't have. Xbox Live is old fashioned now as well, with Steam doing everything that XBL does, except many times it's better. I foresee Microsoft making one more console, then dropping out, and you can quote me on that.

Sony is doing a bit better, but it's too late for them. They just recently started turning a profit, and the PS3 is selling pretty decently, but this doesn't change the fact that it happened too late. The damage is already done, and Sony won't be able to recover it any time soon. I predict that Sony might last for a good while, but they will never be a major player like they were the last two generations.

nobody knows that

as per finance basis if SONY and MS wnat to stay, they can stay as long as they want which Nintendo doesn't have the luxury off

Nintendo has not always been one step ahead and MS and SONY's motion contols aren't entirely for the copying thing but to say that we have both HD and motion control part before next generation launches

you think MS came in here for the console gaming business,as long as SONY is succesful and making living room the entertainment hub and trying to replace PC,MS will always be here

SONY will be here and will someday be dominant again like their past, yes they just made profit but their sacrifice of PS3 was for further profits with blu-ray and PS4

and don't forget NINTENDO was dead in console business and PS3's expensive price gave them the space but PS3's sacrifice will profit SONY with PS4 and blu-ray

I think Nintendo is in the strongest position of any company I know. I think they are even in a better position then Disney. Apple is rolling in the dough right now but I couldn't see them killing Nintendo. I can't see Sony ever being as powerful as they were in the 90's again.

Snake pointed out that the GameBoy kept Nintendo profitable during the mid 90's. What about the GameCube era? The GBA was not that hot compared to the GameBoy and DS. It was Nintendo's ability to profit on all their hardware and software.

Their isn't a single gaming company out there that has never been in the red for a full year.As I said if both Nintendo's handheld and home platform bombed big time and Nintendo took losses similiar to Microsoft's X-Box your talking one billion a generation. Nintendo is worth like 8-billion what are the chances it would fail consistently 8 times?

Someone also said nobody could have seen Sony fail in the 90's, my question is as a company who said Sony's going down? Sure they are taking losses but even Nintendo is going to push them to bankrupcy. Think about it Sony is worth billions and is one of the worlds largest monopolies, they aren't going to be sunk by the PS3 or PSP.

On the other hand even Sony isn't capable of killing Nintendo and neither is Microsoft. So if two of the biggest companies in the world can't kill  Nintendo who could? Someone pointed out Apple if they entered the gaming industry, I beg to differ Apple doesn't have the IP's or internal software teams to challenge Nintendo. Someone also mentioned Sega, if Sega hadn't screwed up with the Saturn and DreamCast they could have poised a threat to Nintendo. Today if Sega Sammy re-entered the industry I think they could pose a threat to Nintendo's market share but I can't even see them killing Nintendo.

In my mind Nintendo is invincible, then again Japan has one of the three largest economies. If it were to go to war or the economy was to collapse maybe Nintendo would collapse with it, then again Nintendo does have international assets.

Sega.  If only they hadn't killed themselves. ;_;

it is certainly possible. but at this point, no.

i think the only company that has a chance anymore is apple. and i dont even think they are serious about gaming. it is possible that a new company could come along and take nintendo's thunder with new, apealing IP's and a more appealing console. but for know, nintneod is the biggest and the smartest kid on the block.

Are you serious?

Games like GT5, FF13, Kilzone 2, etc do absolutely nothing to combat the huge new audience Nintendo has tapped into with the Wii. Sony has trouble getting everything but young males (teen - adult). Not to mention, the PS3 would be something else entirely if it were priced that low (otherwise we may as well imagine the Wii with HD graphics, imagine that?)

Next gen, if third parties start supporting Nintendo, they should dominate even harder. Unless Sony or MS wildly change their strategies, they'll be in decline. Neither seem capable of making / obtaining exclusives with selling power anywhere close to Nintendo's.

well if both Sony and Microsoft, two of the biggest companies of the world couldn't kill nintendo, i think nobody can, i am not saying they will win next gen but Nintendo would always manage a way to make profit

Nintendo itself.
