Forums - General Discussion - What is your take on creationism/creationists?

If you think about some points of the bible, god can come across as a bit of a tyrannical dictator.

He outlaws witchcraft as an abomination (and many crazy people use this teaching to ban books about witchcraft such as Harry Potter but ignore other books such as Macbeth and Lord of the Rings) yet it is fairly obvious that he is supposed to have created the universe using some divine power. This divine power he has sounds a lot like withcraft and magical power, as it sounds unnatural and unearthly. So in effect he is like some totalitarian regimes who keep all the good stuff for themselves and deny it to the populace.

Anyone got an alternative explanation?

What, you mean the UK? Seeing how a lot of the USA (or a larger proportion of the Americans I see on TV) seems to support installing pro-discrimination laws such as the persecution of gays, Id much rather stay in my hole

what you see on TV really isnt "alot of the USA". in fact it is alot less than you might think. try not to generalize what you see on TV as the entire country.

I knew someone would pull me up on that. Yes, it probably isnt a fair generalisation but from everything I know about it it does seem to be a very Conservative Christian country, especially compared to the UK, which, judging by politically based stories Ive seen of the two, is much more accepting of different beliefs and lifestyles.

You have your really conservative states and your really liberal states. of course America is a very conservative christian country for the most part. It was founded on this principle.

And for that Im glad my ancestors remained in the UK

Darwinism itself (not necessary evolution) is a creation story. Listen closely to any Darwinist and they will tell you a story.

I hate when people say it was founded on Christianity. It was founded on the idea that anyone can believe what they want to. I can believe that the earth is flat and I won't get punished like in England during the 1600s if you did not like the Anglican Church. Where in Christianity/the Bible does it say that anyone can believe what they want? The Bible is actually more to the contrary in that it wants people to believe in what the Bible says regardless of evidence or reason. Freedom of religion/ideas is one greatest achievements in world history. Now this is where it gets interesting. When is it okay to accept my ideas over facts? In the education level..NEVER. If your beliefs contradict facts/evidence, then those beliefs should not be taught. You can still believe in those beliefs, but it's wrong to force others to believe an idea that is contrary to all the evidence in education or in a place that is a fortress of knowledge and sense.
