Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony sued over Linux removal, Case documents surface

This lawsuit has legs. This simple fact that Sony sold the feature and promoted it only to remove it shows they did it in their own interest. Also, the fact that the update removed the feature after the hobbyist Geohot announced he had hacked the PS3 to make backup software (pirated games). Sony was protecting their interest at the sake of the consumer. One thing that the lawsuit did not mention was the fact that people using the other OS feature could lose their data (if not backed up) if they updated to the latest update. As the update would completely make the Linux partition unavailable.

They did not removed Linux from anyone as you say. They removed PSN from people who wanna kept Linux, which is very different. So no the lawsuit dont have legs.

Not just PSN. At the moment maybe but as far as I know the new FW consumes less Ram.

That means very soon there will be games which require you to update to FW 3.30 so at the moment just PSN but in the near future more then just PSN. And beeing able to play PS3 games can definetly be expected.

Then they need to wait if they want their lawsuit to have legs. Myself, im sure Sony will never do the error to prevent anyone from playing normal PS3 games. If they do, then too bad for them and I hope they get sued. Now its too fast tho, theres nothing illegual at the moment.

i am interested in see how this plays out.

Hence the choice PSN or Linux?

Now Playing: Crysis 2

Last Finished: BulletStorm

Online IDs: PSN: computermaximus, XBL: computermaximus

I think this is a huge waste of time and money.

If you wanted a fucking Linux computer then build a damn Linux computer! I don't even understand why you would want the PS3 as a computer anyways, the memory and setup is really crappy for a general use computer.

im no expert on the law but the argument that they don't need to download the firmware sounds bs. Without it you soon won't be able to play new games, watch new moves. The ps3 becomes a paperweight.

and until that time the lawsuits have no foot to stand on. You cantt sue someone for something that MIGHT happen in the future.

Well, you choose between the free service Sony does not have to offer or Linux, its all good. If you dont want to accept the agreement then Sony restrict you from accessing their free online service that didnt came with your PS3 purchase. They can restrict PSN to anyone anytime, it shouldnt be a concept too hard to understand.  Sega didnt support a dreamcast store nobody sued them because of that. If you want to push that farther, in about 15 years, when the PS3 will be almost forgotten, Sony will probably close their whole PSN servers restricting access to everyone, do you really think people could sue them and win?

Sony is not force legally to offer PSN, hence they can restrict the access as they please. Thats what they are doing. They are not removing Linux from you, they are removing PSN (their free service they are not leggaly forced to offer). You are removing Linux from yourself if you select to update to keep PSN. PSN wasnt part of your PS3 purchase. Maybe in your mind but not on paper.

Uh, they didn't JUST remove PSN.  They also removed the ability to play some newer games.  You need to have updated firmware to play some newer games.  Sony says so themselves.

In otherwords... you have to choose between being able to play games or not have linux.
