I saw Mississippi and went, "oh."
Saw this documentary where I high school there STILL had segregated proms, in 2008, but it was all good when Morgan Freeman went down there and put the things together. ^_^

It's actually a neat setup. They cancel the official, publicly funded one, and then they can encourage the community to have a private one where they can exclude whoever they wish
It's really a stupid concern on their part. Why did they have to specify that dates be of the opposite sex? It was just asking for trouble either way.

Well it is Mississippi.
If your not familiar with Mississippi... the rest of the south makes fun of Mississippi for being Rednecks or so I hear.
Prom is overrated though... all school dances are. 2-4 hours of sitting around... eating some ok food and then dancing robotically with no fun unless you want the chaperones to get on your asses.
I could see if they did not allow her to go (which would be extreme anyway) but cancelling the entire thing is just stupid. Even so, MS schools have the right to make up their own decisions.

I don't know the area this is taking place at, but my guess is homosexuality is frowned upon. That probably won't change for a few generations.
