Forums - Website Topics - Why Ad Blocking is devastating to the sites you love

The main thing I've got from reading this thread is that rendo is an arrogant and ignorant tool
If this was my website I would have IP banned you for eternity

I don't run ad-blockers, I do sometimes get annoyed by the ads on here however when that happens I simply don't come back for a while. It's like in Australia, there's constant ads on radio about some clinic for erectile disfunction, I'm so sick of hearing it that every time it comes on I switch over to another station or play a CD. I'm sure my actions aren't going to make a difference, but it does to me and if others did the same then I'm sure they'd take notice.

Only once have I ever had this website try to do something malicious and it was picked up by my AV before it could do anything. It's certainly not the only website that's ever been hacked or had malicious code embedded somewhere.

I'd be all for websites blocking their content from people running ad-blockers. This isn't a charity and your actions cost real people their paychecks and maybe even jobs. Businesses aim to grow, not just stay afloat, so by increasing income it in turn allows them to improve their content and quality, sounds like a good situation to me.

I always turn off adblock plus on Vgchartz

And I love how you seem to keep the ads color centric to the theme of the website.

AKA they're mostly dark background ads

Thanks ioi I'll do what I can to support.

Just as a curious inquiry how long has VGC been around?

Honestly, do JRPG makers even realize how hard it is to save the world? That shit is impossible!

Love you too buddy, except I've done nothing wrong.

Oh great, another used games debate.

How so?

Anyway, I don't use ad blockers. If putting up with ads helps the sites I visit, I'll do my part, though the ones with sounds or the malicious stuff do get pretty annoying.

I dunno, the OP just read like it was one XD

Correct. Now you understand how visiting a website works.

If you say so, but until the day a lawyer shows up at my door and shoves paperwork in my face ill continue to browse the internet the way i do.  I guess we are going to have to agree to disagree here kind sir

Which is fine. I just find this whole attitude of "I can do what I want" personally quite annoying which is why I maybe get more animated about this than I should. You chose to visit a website, you accept the content as it is provided (including ads) and you accept the risks associated with consuming that content. That's how it works unfortunately. Your only real right is whether to visit the site or not.

That said, it is absolutely our responsibility and best practice to make sure that you don't get infected by malware or a virus to the best of our ability and this is something we take very seriously. Like I've said, I don't believe we've had a major ad problem for nearly a year now but we have recently had issues with hackers and injections of malicious code which is obviously something that is as much of an annoyance to me as it is to you and something we work hard to fix and prevent in the future.

Last time i checked i can do what ever i want on my pc within US laws and regulations and until a law is passed about ads i will continue to do what i wish with my pc.  Your only option as a content provider is to A. deal with it and accept the profits you are currently raking in and ignore people like me, Or B. try to do something about it but risk losing all the people like me.  I cant believe the attitude you seem to have believing your entitled to force feed me ads without retaliation of any kind simply because your site regurgitates infromation from around the net.

Just shut up already.

Use this site or not, but don't complain when you're the offender.

Genuine question: approximately what percentage of visitors have Ad Blockers enabled? Or is there no way to tell?

A few ads aren't a problem, but this site is the slowest loading site I go to, period. I don't know if it's because of too many ads, or the site has too much flash, but it's a problem. By comparison, try Blues News, another gaming news site here: http://www.bluesnews.com/ . See the difference? It loads in 1 or 2 SECONDS! And he makes a living off his site alone, so maybe it's just a matter of greedyness....

As long as we don't get any ads that break the site like what happened a few months ago

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

It's mostly the flash and the fact that you aren't using google chrome. There is a lot of flash on the front page

There are ways you guys who dont want to turn off your ad-blockers can help prevent us from enforcing anti-ad-blocker policies.

It is quite easy actually. Support us. Use Digg, Red Dot, N4G, Stumble on our articles, reviews, and editorials. Get our content known. Buy gamers t-shirts. We aren't saying buy more than one, more the better but still, one per person here would greatly help. Buy games, music, movies, etc through our amazon store links featured in the game release date section of this site.

Also for those who do not want to buy anything from our sponsor links or spread word of this site to the masses. Disable your ad-blocker. I have the Ad-Blocker-Plus add-on for firefox installed. There is an, option to disable it for this site. Do it.

So pretty much, support us, or lose access to this site till you disable your ad-blocker on this site.
