Forums - Gaming Discussion - Should buyers of pre-owned titles be punished?

http://www.alexevansgames.blogspot.com

Well, should they? We all know that games companies get zero money from the sale of second-hand titles, which some claim is damaging to the industry. But does the trade-in market actually do more good than harm? Recently, Sony blocked pre-owned buyers of Socom:Fireteam Bravo 3 from playing online unless they pay for a code. Unfair, or a good idea?

I discuss this in my latest blog post, pre-OWNED:

What do you think?

People can do what ever they want. All I know is that when a company provides a service and I use that service, then they deserve to be paid for it. When a time come's when some of our favourite studio's begin closing down, then I hope my fellow gamer's can look at what they've gained and then at what they've lost and hopefully see the consequences of their actions.

Bet with Conegamer and AussieGecko that the PS3 will have more exclusives in 2011 than the Wii or 360... or something.

Not in a capitalist society they shouldn't, part of selling something in such a society is the knowledge that it can be resold.

They can only block online, big deal. Single player games are untouchable.

Try lowering the cost of a new game, $60 is too much.

I rarely buy used, but I can understand the need for it. I only buy used if I see an old game that I wanted, but overlooked.

Game publishers want to be issuing non-transferable licenses rather than selling property.

That is the future that we are facing.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

In what respect are videogames different from any other resellable item?

I don't think people who pre-order (especially at Gamestop) should get any special treatment (exclusive characters, maps, etc.). Especially if the pre-order bonus isn't advertised. T-Shirts and figurines, are fine. But don't cut me out of some of the experience because I want to buy the exact same game at the exact same price from the exact same store but I don't pre-order it. Shit. Sometimes, money is tight!

On the flipside, maybe people who buy used don't deserve all of the benefits of people who buy new. A used game plays just like a new game except that the developer gets none of the revenue.

I think Mass Effects 2's giving people bonus DLC or something like that is the best way to go. It doesn't hurt the experience and it encourages new purchases.

I also think Mass Effect 2's pre-order bonus DLC is the worst way to go. Different DLC from five different locations means that NOBODY wins. Some people don't even have a Gamestop to pre-order from.

If anything, the companies trying to take away our freedom should be punished.
