      Derp. It's 2.1 rather than 2.0.

      But the CPU Architecture is garbage. It's low power, low performance. :/

      Not only that, but majority of games will be built with the lowest common denominator which is the PS4's 1.6ghz chip, followed by the Xbox's 1.75Ghz. Chip.

      These consoles should have released in 2011-2012... We should be staring down the barrel of a new gen. :P

      No worries, more devs are pushing the work from the CPU to the GPU like Ubisoft doing cloth physics on the latter with AC which is how it ideally should be ...

      I'd rather not since transistor growth is slowing down. :( (Hopefully it won't take too long to get to 7nm with EUV scanners.)

      They might have to start being smarter with chip design, go for low powered and smaller (To keep yields up) but stacked designs.
      NAND seems to have benefited greatly from it.

      Should be interesting to see how low they can go, especially with fab improvements even at Intel now slowing down.

      We're already pretty smart with chip design if we take a look at the latest Intel CPUs. Die stacking general purpose logic doesn't seem feasible compared to NAND since the power consumption will go through the roof. If it were me I'd howl at programmers instead since we're more software limited ...

      That's where a larger lower-powered chip would be beneficial.
      There are still more power-saving tech that could be used, but they do cost transistors.

      You could have each die as a single or dual core and then stack a core on top of each other.
      If each core was only say... 5-10 watts... Would be feasible.
      But then you need to worry about hot spots in the silicon.

      All the manufacturers will go towards what makes economical sense, Billions are on the line. lol

      Personally speaking that wouldn't be very useful for single threaded performance and even GPUs need some single threaded performance too to handle some synchronization plus there are parts of a graphics pipeline that are serialized too ,..

      It'd make far more economical sense for the larger chip to be designed around higher clocks since you get more performance per transistor than what you just described and have a board that supports multiple chips with a high speed interconnect ... (Processing that silicon in a fab is very expensive so die stacking is the opposite of cost minimization.)

      We need more lithography research around beyond extreme ultraviolet lithography since we'll probably still need double patterning to get to 7nm even with regular EUV!

      Well. To be fair you could make a CPU core wider and larger, which would bolster single core performance.
      You could also throw a ton of cache at the problem.

      The ILP wall stops you from getting higher performance in single threaded programs despite having a potentially higher IPC. Caching is most definitely useful but do note that the bigger the cache, the slower it will get so maybe one day we'll get four levels of on die cache instead of three. Caching becomes less useful for GPUs since they often hide memory access latencies by switching to another in-flight wavefront/warp as evidenced by the register file dwarfs the cache in terms of memory size ...

      If only dennard scaling hadn't died ... :( *Shakes fist at laws of physics*

      We already have L4 cache on some CPU's. Aka. Intel Iris Pro. ;)

      You are right, caching isn't as important on a GPU... To a point.
      If you could have 8 Gigabyte of super fast cache... GPU's would fly. Haha But that would be stupidly expensive when it could be die-space reserved for something else.
      I think HBM out-bandwidths typical cache anyway, Haswell's L1 with overclocking can exceed 1 TB/s... That is something that HBM 2 can achieve... And with that kind of bandwidth, cache becomes pointless from a bandwidth perspective.

      It's a step up from the previous generation nonsense. As far as I understand the PS4K is 100% backwards compatible. It also makes the PS4 forwards compatible, which is a pretty neat thing too.
