Forums - Nintendo Discussion - How does FF9 hold up today?

How well is the game ported? I assume the 4:3 aspect ratio is maintained, but I'm hoping they have some sort of "pixel-perfect" mode. I much prefer that over stretching the image or adding extra post-processing effects to try and smooth the image. Same with in-game text. Square seems to like changing all of the game's text to run at a different resolution on top of the game, if you know what I mean by this. It's hard to describe, but I'd want it to look exactly as it did on the PS1.

For this I would advise looking at a comparison video.

On PS4 and PSVita they looked very good port, on Switch I have no idea.

Mr Puggsly: "Hehe, I said good profit. You said big profit. Frankly, not losing money is what I meant by good. Don't get hung up on semantics"

I'll have to look into the PS4 version as I don't have a Vita. I'm almost finished with my third run through RE2 (which convinced me to go back and beat RE7 as well as the RE1 remake), so now I'm going to need something new to play. Hearing about FF9 makes me wanna go back and finally finish the thing.

I'm also in the market for a good survival horror game but I don't know that there's many I haven't played at this point.

PSP and PS3 have the original game available if you have they (I would prefer the remaster though).

If you didn't play Alien Isolation and Evil Within are quite good. They have the fell of survival.. you don't have much ammo, you shouldn't fight much, you have to escape and survive. And in Alien you have that Nemesis fell, but on an enemy you can't kill and can kill you with a single hit, you really need to stay focused and hidden.

Never played a mainline Final Fantasy before this (always been a Dragon Quest man), have picked up/started IX today. Am an hour in and enjoying it so far, the graphics are old-school, but I like that. Not a fan of the big gap between savepoints, but that's a given in old RPGs so I can't really hold that against it. Enjoying it so far.

Holds up wonderfully imo, it's my absolute favorite entry in the series.

Definitely recommend picking it up on Switch or whatever platform it's on (I have it on iPad as well, it plays well there surprisingly)

I’m about 8-9 hours into it so far and I’m hooked! I am very much enjoying my time with it. Looking forward to really sitting down at home and playing it through to the end.

I just arrived in Lindblum. It's very good, if you like turn-based JRPGs. The battles are a little slow. There's long pauses between actions for some reason. But, I'm really digging the world and story so far. I miss Final Fantasy games like this. The new ones... don't really feel like Final Fantasy to me anymore.

You can speed it up a little bit in the Config menu by changing the Battle Speed and Battle Camera settings options, it's not a drastic improvement but it does take a bit of the edge off.

Seems like there is a lot of first time here, really happy you are liking the game.

Thanks! I'll have to look into that. I know I couldn't find a way to turn off the awful borders. I just want black.

And the character name screens say "Emoticons are not allowed," evidencing what a slapdash port job this was. Still, the game itself is fun, so I'm happy. :)
