I first encountered HDR on my DSLR camera and RAW image editing software a decade ago and tried all the big Ps4 exclusives in 2017 and 2018 in HDR and 4k, mostly, such as Horizon, Detroit, God of war etc however I only bought a HDR TV back in November and while I thought it was impressive everytime I used it, it's nothing yo what I am now aware of through using it regularly the last two months, I've taken to replaying levels, sections and with HDR on and off with 1080p and 4k and while 4k is pretty decent in games to sharpen images and make everything look that bit crisper, HDR goes above and beyond and makes games look as if they've bee  remastered.

It makes such a difference it's unbelievable, While playing GoW through the alpheniem section whole turning HDR on and off, the game looks entirely different as if the non HDR version wasn't properly finished and the devs had yet to add much of the textures and light sources. The HDR brings out mass ammounts of detail in games while makinb them look renderd more thourally, something it doesn't do in Photographs or TV and film, It can make a game (GT sport) look as if the non HDR version is a generation apart.

Film is pretty decent too, Polar on Netflix shows how it can be used to compliment scenes by using it in only certain areas to make things pop and Planet Earth 2 shows how it can be used with luminosoty and colour enhancment through the entirety of an image but both of these have nothing on the way devs are implementing the tech in games like the new Circuit X in GT spor which seems to be a showcase for HDR to show it off. Obviously HDR is better in 4k, that said, 4k is overrated without HDR to augment the content.

If you are thinking of getting 4k, make sure you have a solid HDR display as it is where the biggest difference will be, hell i'd even say (as long as you aren't future proofing for ps5) skip 4k and grab a really good 1080p HDR display.

Anyone here agree or disagree? Also, what is your favourite HDR content?

I'm playing Re2 in 4k, HDR right now with my ps4 pro and 4k TV while also playing the demo on another account on my OG ps4 at 1080p swapping from room to room and while it's not the best use of 4k, HDR it makes the game look next level, like a generational remaster akin to TLOU on Ps3 vs TLOU on ps4.

The PC version is even more detailed, even in 1440p. I've had the chance to play it in 4K on both consoles actually, and while the resolution makes a difference, some of the extra juice is missing.

Regardless, it's a grand slam on all three devices. We're definitely at that point in the gen! As far as what to "push", ray tracing isn't going to really be a serious thing even next gen (yes, I know some are hyping it like such, but it's going to take much more than that). Pound-for-pound, feature-for-feature, it will be a bigger deal on visual quality than HDR, however. If given the choice, there's no question where my allegiances would be.

Used it with Odyssey on X1X, it's nicer but can live without it.

Oh, on consoles HDR is restricted to 4K, had a 1440p HDR monitor and could not use it unless I chose to use a 4K signal. It was never native 4K, guessing it was downscaled.

It's not restricted to 4k. I've booted up loads of games in performance mode as well as 1080p from the menu on the pro. Also, OQ PS4's have HDR which is much less impressive but still closer to HDR 10 than 8bit. I'm not sure what you're problem would have been there but I have used three different cables now, a 15 euro one, the pro standard one and a 80 euro cable and while the 15 euro one is largely the same as the 80 euro one, the Pro standard cable (hdmi 2.0) is pretty shit, you can see the HDR but there is a massive loss in quality. Also, might have been your monitor, no? Most have a setting to allow enhanced colour that is not turned on by default, perhaps you didn't turn out HDR.

My LG E6 doesn't play well with my ps4 Pro.
If I want to watch DVD/blu-ray on my PS4 pro I have to turn off "deep-color" on the LG.
So I did and forgot about it.

I was playing ni no kuni 2 and one day noticed a setting for "HDR". I then recalled that I had deep color turned off, so I decided to turn it on. I had played plenty of HDR games before, but not when my TV actually had HDR. So ni-no kuni 2 was my first HDR game on an HDR TV.

I was blown away. The affect it has on colors is amazing. I'm a large fan of HDR right now.

Third party games gave nothing on the way it is implemented in first party Sony exclusives. Horizon, GoW and GT sport are far ahead of any other games with HDR including other exclusives like Detroit, Spiderman or Uncharted LL and those are still better than than games like Monster hunter, Odessy, Red dead 2 or Resident evil 7/ Re2. Some of which are fake HDR or very poor implementation. Very few third party games have gotten close to Sony's bigguns, The witcher 3 maybe.

Trust me, I've spent dozens of hours now examining each after finishing them plat'ing them all before I played in HDR.

The effect on colours is pretty cool but I recommend playing through Alpheniem on God of a war or night race tracks on GT sport to see how  it can work on luminosty and textures. What's your favourite, Btw?

The difference it makes when looking at the colors is outstanding from my limited experience. This is more worthwhile than any resolution upgrade proposed this gen so far.

I don't have many HDR games right now. Spider-man looked very good. Ni-no kuni 2 just looks jaw-dropping in HDR. Various VR games look good, although I can't tell if that is the HDR or the VR.

Haven't played a PS4 game since then though. I'm all in on KH3 so I didn't want to be playing anything when it came out.

I am tempted to get a cheap version of uncharted 4 simply to re-play it with HDR on.  I remember being blown away by the colors at (I think E3?) but never saw it in person.
