Forums - Gaming Discussion - Wii: What Happens When the Novelty Wears Off?

The Wii's novelty will wear off when Sony releases their full motion sensing device for the PS3. Because now gamers will be able to have the best of both worlds. Full motion sensing with actual real next gen graphics.

Well, my best world is "full motion sensing" without "actual real next gen graphics", plus $350 in my wallet to spend in games - yes, "kiddy" games, thank you very much.

But that's just mii (for 6.66 million different values of mii, that is), and... wii mustn't really be gamers at all.

Reality has a Nintendo bias.

The Novelty has already worn off, its just that I prefer the Wii controls to the older gampads, and that's where his argument fails, Wii controls are just better in most cases (that's not to say gamepads are going away, but there should be choice)

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

Well the "novelty" hasnt worn off on the ds has it?

And as for graphics, i hate all this bollocks spouted by the marketting men and sucked up by the fankids. Games dont need to be hi-def, most people dont even have a hi-def tv to take advantage of it. I personally think the biggest problem of the games industry is that games rely on technology to innovate when they shoud be innovating in other ways (i.e. gameplay).

Does having prettier pixels REALLY make a game better? REALLY think about it.  The post above states that the ps3 has "real next gen" graphics.  That to me is also bullcrap.  Lets just say microsoft went out all sticks and released a new xbox next year, which was made from the most expensive pc parts money could buy.  It'll be 100 times more powerful than the ps3, and cost $5000 - which of course no-one is going to pay.  Does that however make the ps3 "last gen" because it doesnt have the graphics to cope?  Hmmmmm?

But on the other hand, i'd also argue that mario galaxy looks better graphically than a hell of a lot of 360 games (and certainly more fun).

Do you mean the device that sells poorly because it has no developers support, or the device that gets no developer support because it will sell poorly?

No. I'm talking about the Playstation 3. Which actually hasn't sold poorly.

Over 3 million people and counting have already spent 599.99 and some have spent more than 599.99 USD.

I wasn't talking about the PS3 ...

There has never been an add-on that has sold particularly well for any videogame system; they end up being niche products that are very poorly supported. You can not make a Wiimote add-on for the PS3 and expect it to sell more than a few hundred thousand units worldwide, and with expectations of such a small userbase no developer will support it.

Yeah, and the sales are slowing, those 3 million are what is called early adopters, the mass market won't pay that much

Check out the hardware sales comparison between the GameCube and PS3 in Japan to really understand Avinash's point.  PS3 sales are trailing off just as quickly and badly as the GCN's but it didn't have as big a launch.  The PS3 is now well behind the GameCubes low sales pace in Japan.  An even worse comparison, if you can bare to look, is PS2 vs. PS3 sales. Then you may begin to realize how much smaller the market willing to pay $600 for a box to play video games is.

Some sales analyst have just recently predicted that the PS3 will sell about 75 million units worldwide within a 6 year time frame. But they can't see the future. Neither can me or you.
