Forums - General Discussion - 2009 OSCAR Nominations are IN -- Avatar is there for "Best Film"!

I'll be rooting for Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon to get best actor/supporting for Invictus...excellent movie. Oh, and El Secreto de Sus Ojos to get best foreign because it's Argentinian, even though I haven't watched it (I must be the only one here in Argentina who hasn't)

Inglourious Basterds was my favorite movie of the year, so it's nice to see it got so many (8) nominations. I hope it takes at least one (besides the obvious supporting actor Oscar), definitely a movie that deserves it.

Well, the Oscars always disappoint me anyway, I don't know why I let myself care for this stuff...!

I hope Fantastic Mr Fox gets the praise that it deserves. Better than Up imo.

Inglorious Basterds is also a shoe-in for Best Original Screenplay, and should have a decent shot at Best Editing, although Avatar and The Hurt Locker will give it some competition there. Tarantino also has an outside shot of winning Best Director, but I wouldn't count on it. Overall, expect two Oscars for the movie, with the possibility of another two.

By my guesstimation, if the Academy had kept the Best Pic nominations to five like they usually do, I would have anticipated them to be the following:

Avatar
Inglourious Basterds
Up In the Air
Precious
The Hurt Locker

Tag: Became a freaking mod and a complete douche, coincidentally, at the same time.

Just finished watching The Hurt Locker, and it was very well done. I definitely could see Kathryn Bigelow getting the Best Director Oscar (1. Because it was fantastically directed and 2. Because we all know how the Academy likes to shake things up, especially now that Cameron won the Globe), but I'm not too sure about the Best Picture award. We'll see...

Poor Ralph Finnes (And Guy Pierce...)

Basterds deserves best screenplay like no other.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

Weird? No set design awards this year? I swear that used to be a category or am I just losing it.

I'm almost positive Waltz will get supporting actor. Not just because it was one of the finest performances you'll see in cinema, but because supporting actor/actress oscars tend to get used to honor the films that get snubbed in other categories. And Basterds seems like it's just far too amazingly cool and exceptional to get oscars in the big categories.

Notice none of the Actor's in Avatar are up for awards

Neither is the script. I don't care too much, but I personally don't consider any film the best of any year if it doesn't have top notch performances and/or a top notch script. Avatar's award nominations remind me of Memoirs of a Geisha, where it's all bread and no meat.

I'll be pulling for The Hurt Locker, Up and Precious myself

Can you not steal my thoughts? All three were great movies.

I am the Playstation Avenger.

I can't believe Avatar got a nod for best editing. I remember right around the time when the colonel is about to fight Jake there was a cut so blunt, it scared the crap out of me.

Anyway. absolutely shocked and delighted to see District 9 and Up both get a best picture nod. Of course they won't win, but warms my heart either way.

About time Bridges wins one. One of the most underrated actors ever imo.

Every single movie in the best pic category is better than Avatar. Seriously. If the Academy gives it to Avatar, I'm gonna die a little inside.
