I think you're wrong about that. When they cut the price sales were only briefly up YoY again, and quickly declined again. The run up to the holiday season was not fantastic for Wii. It's only after NSMB released, which just happened to have phenomenal sales in the timeframe, that we've seen massive YoY growth, which even continued after December and appears to be the cause of shortages now.

 

We'll never be able to prove 100% which was the bigger factor, but NSMB lines up much better with Wii's YoY increases than the price cut does.

It's really hard to say either way, because NSMB also aligned perfectly with the general holiday buying season.  I'd say it really was more likely equal parts software, price and season that led to the turnaround.

Why should the season influence YoY growth, we had the same season at the same time last year too, YoY factors in seasonal changes in demand automatically. Perhaps if the supply was well below demand last Christmas, but it likely wasn't. Christmas 08 was the first time that ebay prices of Wii were not higher than in stores during the holidays.

The season inherently stimulates increased buying, and the platform was already up YOY before Mario.  Again, it's a bit hard to just attribute the increase to Mario mostly, though in some regions (Japan) I wouldn't doubt that's the case.  I think the price drop was a big factor in the west though, and the other killers apps (Sports Resort, Fit Plus) but also played a significant part.  Really, it was a perfect storm, right price, right games, right time.



The Wii was also in short supply in Europe from Nov. '08 until Feb '09. At least in the U.K. it was.

Only after NSMB did it start to be up YoY. I'm not saying the price cut or the other games were non-factors, but it's clear the biggest factor was NSMB, especially since the increases also correspond with the regions that NSMB was a bigger hit (others has been sliding down YoY, and that's where NSMB hasn't hit it off as well).

Er, NSMBW was proportionately the biggest hit in Japan, and I thought YOY numbers were the worst there Q4?  Wii was also up YOY in Japan the weeks before Mario too iirc?



No, YoY numbers in Japan are excellent since NSMB release. Japan is keeping the numbers up while others and shortages in the US are keeping things down.

Wii was down or flat until NSMB in Japan. After NSMB Wii it's strongly up.
