Wii Fit is also nowhere to be found.
I wanted to buy it for my grandfather but I couldn't find it.

wait, which 3 AAA titles that were released 1 or 2 months apart were you talking about? |
Wii Sports Resort in July (13 million sales and counting).
Metroid Prime Trilogy in August.
$50 price cut in September.
Wii Fit Plus in October (9.5 million and counting).
New Super Mario Bros. Wii in November (11 million and counting).
All that momentum built up to a Christmas Nintendo explosion in December and shortages in January.
Damn, I forgot Wii Sports Resort was that early back in July. I was talking about Wii Sports Resort, Wii Fit Plus, and New Super Mario Bros. Wii.
heres a twist
first time the ps3 had shortages in 3 years! meaning its going up in popularity.
All the systems (except PSP) have had shortages in various places at given points:
Wii:
USA - Nov 2006 to Feb 2009
~ Dec 23 - Jan 2010
Japan - Dec 2006 to June 2007
Europe - Dec 2006 to May 2008
PS3:
USA - Nov 2006 to Jan 2007
Aug-Sept 2009
Japan - FFXIII week
Europe - March-April 2007
Dec 2009
X360:
USA - Nov 2005 - Feb 2006
DS:
Japan - Mid 2006 - Jan 2008
USA - Nov-Dec 2008 / Dec 2009
Europe - Nov-Dec 2008
Wii is more unpredictable than the others though because it retains high demand month in/month out in the west, whereas the unpredictability of DS was more centered in Japan. Nintendo had just lowered its forecast for the 3/2010 year from 26m to 20m and analysts thought that was too high, now it looks like Wii may get to 21m or so and they'll be blamed for being too conservative.
Whats interesting about Wii is it went:
Sept 2009 Quarter (Pre-Price Cut, Pre-Wii Fit Plus, Pre-NSMB Wii): 3.53m and then 11.31m during the Christmas quarter.
Sept 2008 Quarter: 4.91m / Dec 2008 Quarter: 10.4m
X360 after a price cut in late Summer in 2008 went : 2.2m (Q3 2008) to 6.0m (Q4 2009)
The Wii price cut was pretty potent

Within 5 months, and within 6 months they'd all already cleared 10m. I can't think of a shorter timespan for 3 10m sellers from the same company, can you?
kingofwale said: was Nintendo seeing "UNEXPECTED" high leve of sales? if yes, then they need to do a better job predicting the market. |
LOL. Nobody fails like Nintendo does.
Not really "still" shortages, more like shortages AGAIN. But either way, pretty impressive. Hopefully Nintendo can get their asses into gear once again and accommodate the new demand, which is no doubt triggered mainly by NSMB Wii.

Shortages are not necessarily caused by reduced production. It could also be that retailers did not anticipate continued high sales in January and as such didn't increase their orders.

I think you're wrong about that. When they cut the price sales were only briefly up YoY again, and quickly declined again. The run up to the holiday season was not fantastic for Wii. It's only after NSMB released, which just happened to have phenomenal sales in the timeframe, that we've seen massive YoY growth, which even continued after December and appears to be the cause of shortages now.
We'll never be able to prove 100% which was the bigger factor, but NSMB lines up much better with Wii's YoY increases than the price cut does.
