Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo's unique strategy

Nintendo seems to be teaming with 3rd parties:

The Last Story - Mistwalker x Nintendo

Metroid Other M - Team Ninja x Nintendo

Xenoblade - Monolithsoft x Nintendo (I know their now 2nd party but still...)

Zangeki No ReginLiev - Sandot x Nintendo

So what are your thoughts on nintendo doing, to boost the next Smash Bros rooster, to make some new ips just cause perhaps?

I'd like to know your opinions on Nintendo's strategy!

Nintendo owns Monolith Soft so it dosen't really count.

It's not necessarily a new strategy for Nintendo (Mario and Sonic at the Olympics by Sega, Star Fox by Namco, the Mario Kart arcade game by Namco, F-Zero by Sega, Mario Basketball by Square-Enix, Mario DDR by Konami, etc.), but they're REALLY cranking it up a notch right now, and I'm loving it.

And on top of the games mentioned in the OP, they're going to help market Monster Hunter Tri for Capcom and Dragon Quest X for Square-Enix.

To be honest, if Nintendo really drops a Mario/Metroid/Zelda/Pokemon/Wii super-bomb all in one year, 3rd parties won't stand a chance. So Nintendo's just being a good sport and helping everybody out.

(EDIT: forgot about the Zelda games made by Capcom.)

Most of the games named in the OP, as well as DQX are directed at Japan, anyway. The 3D Mario / Metroid / Zelda super-bomb will... not do much in Japan, they're all pretty damn weak in that region (relative to their western performances). I'm not even sure if any of these will reach a million.

I'm psyched for the MH3 and (hopefully) DQIX support by Nintendo, though. I'd love to see these franchises get some popularity in the west - the quality is there, they should stand out due to their massive content (and budget) as it is.

My opinion - I think Nintendo America is sitting on their fat ass while Nintendo Japan do ALL the work. (Epic Mickey is only one eg. i can think of but i don't really know if Ninty did any moneyhatting or anything)

Good for Japan, and their markets preference for games, Fucking awful for Westerners.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Yeah your right, but do you think they'll do something for Epic Mickey?

It's not a new strategy... It's just now they're not trying to get games exclusive on the GameCube they can attract bigger and better games.

Yeah, as long as they work together with the other studios I'm fine with this strategy.
They can't, however, pull a CDI-Zelda/Mario and give Ips to others to develop by themselves.

I think it's a great idea, for several reasons. First, there are some incredibly talented people and studios that Nintendo doesn't own that can obviously make great games, so why not utilitze their talents and skills? Secondly, it gets people excited. When I heard about the new Metroid, I honestly thought "Again, already?" but when I saw it was being developed by Team Ninja, it got me excited and it got people talking about it and generated some early, positive buzz. Third, because Nintendo's first-party line-up has always been so strong, so iconic, by branching out and reaching out and working with these third-party studios, it does help spread some of the love around, but I think that's more a PR thing than anything else. And Finally, while Nintendo has great ideas, it by means doesn't have them all, so seeing how a different studio might come in with a fresh vision, a fresh take on a classic property is something lots of people would pay to see...

Bah!
