Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Will Metroid Other M be the Metroid to sell to mainstream gamers?

Why would you say that Assassin's Creed was more hardcore than core?

Nothing sells big by selling mainly to the hardcore. The hardcore are a small percentage of the core, what makes them important to publishers is that they buy a lot more games generally, but there's not enough of them to make games sell multi millions.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

If you mean the 'core' gamers already owning Wii's then yes possibly. There's too little info right now to make any sort of informed decision but it could possibly be the most successful Metroid (but that's not saying much really).

If you mean the HD 'mainstream' gamer then hell no, not a chance in hell. One game, will not get someone to buy a system unless it's a huge franchise, and offers endless replay or at least very long story mode. Zelda, Halo, FF, Gran Turismo yes. MoM? No. MH3 maybe. Now could MH3, MoM, The Last Story, Xenoblade and Zelda Wii combined prompt HD gamers to finally buy a Wii. Could be, could be. But aside from MH3 we know too little to even say that.

Based on Sakamoto's intention to make it different from previous Metroids and focus on the narrative and Samus' character, it's going to be even less successful than Prime in terms of sales.

Core just refers to the main established market. Ie. people who have bought video games traditionally. "Hardcore" means the people who could be called hobbyists or enthusiasts. They're seen as important despite the fact that they're few in numbers because they buy many times the average core gamer.

Well what i was thinking about was the mainstream GAMER, not the mainstream audience. Mario, Halo, GTA will be remembered by those that arent even gamers. Those franchises are beyond gamers, and are part of the popular culture now. Games like Gears, God of War, Assassins Creed, and, to a lesser extent, Zelda are all popular GAMER games, franchises well known to your average gamer, but not so to your average person.

The Metroid series has never sold to the mainstream gamer, and im wondering if the newfound focus on cinematics and story will make it more appealing to that market.

Okay I understand. But what is mainstream in relation to core then?

I'm buying it day one, if you look at my game collection, that's saying something. And I am anything but "hardcore".

I think it's going to do substantially better than the recent Retroids for 2 reasons...

1) the Japanese will actually buy it
2) Nintendo will actually advertise it

...2m+ worldwide is a lock imo. Might even pass 3m depending on the quality of the game.

Japan never got into Super Metroid either though. Sure itll sell better because its sourced is Team Ninja, and it isnt in first person, but will it be a substancial difference? I doubt it.
