Forums - Sales - Are SE reconsidering DQX for the PS3?

Nintendo's going to co-promote DQIX in the west, so I think it'll probably do well. Also worth pointing out that DQVIII shipped 2m units in the west (1.2m EU, 800k NA), so the franchise has at least seen some improvement (even though the DS remakes all kinda fizzled).

Also, going back to MH3, Capcom just updated shipment figures and it somehow shipped another 50k the last quarter. Failure indeed! ;)

Yes, hopefully the Nintendo marketing will help, but SquareEnix should add to that themselves.  SquareEnix has yet to state they're going to promote DQIX themselves.  So hopefully from now on they'll start actually putting some marketing into their games like they did with DQVIII and Joker.  AKA learn from the mistakes of the DS remakes and what no marketing has gotten them.

well, I'd expect a big SE push.  It's always been one of Wada's goals to hit it big with DQ in the west, and DQIX is probably the best chance they've ever had (DS is huge, hype from Japan, Nintendo promotion).  I'm eager to see how they translate the the social aspects (group questing, map sharing, etc) to the western markets though (online?).  I also half wonder if Nintendo won't just handle publishing themselves, if only in Europe (like MH3).

Maybe SE should consider doing an anime series to tie in?  Even if just for making it bigger in the west, using the Pokemon formula could help (see: Inazuma Eleven)...

If its always been one of Wadas goals, he sure hides it well.  All he ever seems to talk about is Final Fantasy 24/7.

As for doing stuff like a Anime series and such, they actually did do that in the early 90s.  It did well in Japan, but when it was brought over here, the localization was so mishandled (story of the series) that only 13 episodes were aired and was cancelled after that.  Most of the show was highly edited with mismatched scenes from one episode spliced into another, altered dialogue and bad quality transfer from the original source.

In principle, I think such ideas could definitely work.  But in practice, I just don't see the current SquareEnix working that hard to make Dragon Quest popular outside of Japan.  As much as I would like them to.  In the end, I'd rather they just focus on trying to actually make the games themselves have a better localization (all the games after DQVIII have been really pathetic and cheesy) and market them well enough to a point people actually know they exist.

Well, early 90s was also pre-Pokemon. In the late 90s even stuff like Yu-Gi-OH! and Monster Rancher seemed to "take off" thanks to kids TV tie-ins.  And that's also the gameplan Level-5 looks to be taking for stuff like Inazuma Eleven and The Little Battlers.  If Hori has cold feet about basing a tie-in on DQIX/X, they could also do something based off Monsters Joker instead.

And honestly, I think the recent DQ localizations have been pretty good.  I know the dialects were controversial in DQIV, but I thought they were fun, charming and seemed to have a lot more care put into them than most localizations.  Reminded me a bit of Nintendo's more fun localizations (like the Mario & Luigi or Paper Mario games).  DQV felt a little dry afterwards imo, but still solid and at least they did party talk that time.  Rocket Slime was cute as expected, but I never played Joker.

Jeez! I really can't believe some people! Why on earth would SE swap development from Wii to PS3? I can't think of one benefit for them doing so. It would sell more on Wii in both Japan and the west and would also cost a lot less to make. To all those people who think it would sell more on PS3 in Japan, take a look at the installed bases. Wii will probably have the advantage of having one of about 12-13m by the time it comes out. It will probably reach numbers PS3can only dream about. Say if 4m Wii owners buy it, that will probably be over 50% of the ENTIRE PS3 userbase by then. No game could expect to have that sort of penetration rate, therefore PS3 sales couldn't hope to approach those numbers. Try looking at the PS3 tie ratio in Japan too. Even with Final fantasy, it is pathetic. Wii SW sales are often 4x PS3 SW sales even when HW sales are less than 2x PS3 sales.

Dragon quest 10 isn't coming to PS3. Get over it. If you really want to play the game you will have to buy yourself a Wii. Heard they were going cheap now.

In my opinion the N64 was not just the best console of the 5th gen but, to this day the best console ever created!

Heck they should make it for both. If not then Wii can have DQX and then PS3 can have DQXI or something. DQ is pretty good, I have the 8th one for PS2, but I definitely prefer other RPG's over it. I would much rather have a MH for PS3 instead. Anyone have any idea if they plan on releasing one in the near future?

Thought it was only Wii fans that cried when-x- game wasn't being released for their console!

Heck, and why not make FFXV and Star Ocean 5 for Wii while they're at it.

@ jarrod

If the fans want it, why not?  Just put 2 teams on it so it doesn't detract from either game and I say have at it.

Because for a major game like Dragon Quest, you can't simply put 2 teams on it.  There's only one main group at a time working on the games (Armor Project) along with the main development group chosen to do the game (such as ChunSoft, ArtePiazza or Level-5).  It takes these groups about 3-5 years to make one version of the game.  Look at Dragon Quest IX.  It took them 5 years to make that game, and it was a DS game.  This was following Dragon Quest VIII, which had nearly a 4 year development time table.

If you tried to add HD consoles to the mix, you would need a lot more work than just adding a new team.  You would need to pretty much create a whole new game engine and start from the ground up.  And since much of the game is developed early on by concept design and planning (by series creators Yuji Horii and Akira Toriyama), that's not really realistic and focusing the games development on one platform is ultimately the best way to go.

Along with the fact that you will get higher sales in Japan by focusing the game on one platform and hyping the game early.
