I am confused : Is this good news or bad news, I wouldn't know reading this thread.

It all depends PSrock.

1) If you are not partial to any company and have an open, non-bias view it is POSITIVE news (if the forecast is indeed correct) based on what was generally predicted will be an other bad quarter  - until last month or so when positive signs surfaced.

2) If you expected $3billion profit for the quarter or anti-sony it is BAD news.

3) If you are pro sony it is GOOD news.

Don't get too bog down in bullshit like operational profit and that crap, the last few quarters sony was making a $billion+ NET LOSS.

Edit: They were in the red even before deductions.

********

Things to take into account.

The losses sony were taking before and the cost cutting measures taken..lay offs etc.,

Christmas.

There you go, POSITIVE, GOOD and BAD.

Edit: changed operational loss to net loss.

Its confirmed that their games division is profitable. No one can say Sony is broke now. Sony is only going up from here with their games division becoming more and more profitable and their 3D tv's coming out.

1- Nothing is confirmed, this is just a prediction of Sony's results (even if it's a prediction from a quite good source, which it is).

2- Profitability in the holiday quarter is much easier than general profitability.

While this is good news if it holds up, it's not as good as you make it look.

Yes, but it could turn out to be no where near as bad as many predicted.

After the huge billion$ losses Sony took over the last year this - if correct - is "not so good"?

Christmas? The analysts took christmas into account along with the cost-cutting restructuring sony did and still forecasted a major loss for the quarter.

You know what, I am beginning to think that even if Sony posted a trillion$ profit there are those like yourself who will still call it a poor result, just because it is sony.

Vice versa if nintendo or MS made only 50cent  profit it would be still be a marvelous result.

I thought you were more balanced than that.

Well maybe you should read my post properly. I said it's good news and I did not say it's "not so good".

YES, you did say it was GOOD NEWS. My very, very humble apologises.

Still friends??

Operational losses can only get bigger.  They can't get smaller, hence why operational loss doesn't really matter vs net loss... it's a loss.

True. My error - posting to many posts too quickly. That should have read net loss. I will edit it. Thanks.

Yay Sony!

How could anyone see this as a bad thing? I don't even like Sony (other than PS3), and this is good. Money = jobs (eventually).

Go Stringer!

I don't think anyone sees it as a BAD thing.  Just not an indication of a good thing yet... since this doesn't gurantee net profits.

Though the fact that they aren't guranteed net losses itself is a good thing, even based on a prediction.

It'd be like for example, if you had a kid who got straight As, then got into drugs or depressed or something then started getting F's... then the next semester he had a C for his first grade.

There is no gurantee he won't still flunk out, but there is hope he'll pull a gentlemenly C.

PS3 will recover, people are way to fussed about this~~

That's not true. A company can sell assets to cover an operational loss. They can post a net profit despite having an operational loss.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

seems like a step in the right direction

no matter how you spin it: whether it's a gain or a loss, Sony probably deals with more money on a daily basis than many of us will see in a lifetime. I don't know why people get so uptight when it comes to Sony's finances.
