Does the thing have GPS? If it did I could find a use for it as an in car computer interface.

Yet another moronic, overpriced product from Apple that will sell millions and millions simply because it has a fruit on the cover. Going by many tech articles of today, I'm surprised I've survived without all these must have's from Apple (iMac, iPod, iPhone and now iPad) and yet, here I am still alive and I still don't want any of it!

LOl. That's funny.

OT: I really don't know how this is gonna turn out.

Remember, Steve Balmer of MS apparently laughed when he heard of the iphone, now he is cringing when he sees the profits...OK, I made the last bit up.

It's either gonna be a success or a failure.

I know, that doesn't say much but ... I don't know.

lol. You must be assimilated. Resistance to apple is futile...

I think the whole reason the kindle is as popular as it is, is because of it's technology and brand, which is completely different from the iPad. You can't say they even compare to each other for any reason. One isn't better than the other, and they aren't even cutting into the sales of each other.

If you have the 3G version it does, but then the minimum price is $630 plus a monthly charge.

At that point, the iPhone works just as well.

The 3G is actually incredibly worthless on the iPad because in what situation can you think of where you would be in a place you need 3G and it would work better enough to justify the cost?  I can't think of one.

  • At home -- use wifi
  • Cofee Shop -- use wifi
  • On the Road -- I would need 3G, but what would I be doing I couldn't use the iPhone just as well?
  • Grocery Store Looking Up a Recipe -- This would work, but again, the iPhone works just as well and who would carry the iPad into a grocery store?

Maybe if the iPad came before the iPhone it would be incredble, but the fact it's just a larger much more expensive iPhone (or actually iPod Touch) that's less convenient just makes it not worthwhile at all.

I can see a lot more use for it than that. The added value of the 3G is in the GPS unit. So whilst at home it wouldn't matter so much but in the outside world, you're not always going to be close to a WiFi source. Im not so fussed on the 3G, but the GPS makes it userful.

Again though, what advantage does the iPad GPS have over the iPhone or iPod Touch GPS?

  • Walking around a city I don't want to hold an iPad
  • Driving in a car, I don't want to hold an iPad
  • Being a passanger giving directions is nice, but it's not so much better that it's worth the extra money.

Some complete dealbreakers for me are:

No HDMI Out
Want to watch those nice HD videos you downloaded from iTunes on your TV? Too damned bad! If you were truly loyal, you'd just buy an AppleTV already.

No Flash
No Flash is annoying but not a dealbreaker on the iPhone and iPod Touch. On something that's supposed to be closer to a netbook or laptop? It will leave huge, gaping holes in websites. I hope you don't care about streaming video! God knows not many casual internet users do. Oh wait, nevermind, they all do.

No Multitasking
This is a backbreaker. If this is supposed to be a replacement for netbooks, how can it possibly not have multitasking? Are you saying I can't listen to Pandora while writing a document? I can't have my Twitter app open at the same time as my browser? I can't have AIM open at the same time as my email? Are you kidding me? This alone guarantees that I will not buy this product.

A Closed App Ecosystem
The iPad only runs apps from the App Store. The same App Store that is notorious for banning apps for no real reason, such as Google Voice. Sure, netbooks might not have touchscreens, but you can install whatever software you'd like on them. Want to run a different browser on your iPad? Too bad!

I was expecting a tablet laptop of some kind with osx. Pass.
