How dare you make this first statement?
On topic. He is one of the most famous ficitonal characters in the world. This is why he is still the mascot of Nintendo.

"Now, a fun game should always be easy to understand - you should be able to take one look at it and know what you have to do straight away. It should be so well constructed that you can tell at a glance what your goal is and, even if you don’t succeed, you’ll blame yourself rather than the game. Moreover, the people standing around watching the game have also got to be able to enjoy it." - Shiggy

look at the little icon in the address bar. It's Mario. While Mario may not have been released as a launch game, Mario is indeed their mascot and pretty much always will be.
Another example of a mascot that doesn't always take the limelight, is that Disney has Mickey as their mascot and doesn't always mention Mickey.
Anyways, these topics are always so stupid and selfish. People keep posting that item "x" has to go away, especially when millions of others are still enjoying it. If you don't want it, just shut up and don't buy it.

ouch. buurrrrrn.
true though.
Mario is not getting old, he's already old enough.
Mario just got annoying and returned to be cool about 2 or 3 times already, I remember getting sick of Mario's face during N64 fever, and know he look's ok again.
I guess Mario is just too old to get old...
main reason because Pokemon couldn't replace Mario is that they just don't reach every age range, unlike Mario.
