There was a post - or posts a while back claiming Japan is no longer important and doesn't matter (in terms of sales). Most in agreement were from the x360 camp.

Well, here is your answer.

To some it does not matter but to Microsoft it damn well matters and they are still willing to throw good money at it, yet again.

Japan is very important to this industry in every way.

I don't see it working; MS seems to have lost Japan completely (apparently, some shops won't pay more than ¥500 for used 360s because they have so much trouble selling them).

Also, every thread I've seen where the main focus is 360 sales in Japan seems sooner or later to turn into a flamewar where people say that the Japanese won't buy them because they're xenophobic, so Inb4 flamewars

Funny that. And in those threads where xenophobia is raised as an issue among the Japanese many point out that the ipod(american and the most popular MP3 player in japan) have no such problem and is giving sony (japanese) a thrashing in the MP3 player war.

Maybe the Japanese just don't like the x360 (for many reasons pointed out in this thread) and some people can't accept and live with that without bringing up xenophobia as an excuse everytime this subject is brought up.
