Forums - Nintendo - Do you have more fun with Mario Galaxy or NSMB Wii?

SMG is far superior. Plus it ticks me off to no end that I can't use the classic controller to play NSMB. Turning the Wiimote sideways is awkward.

Malstrom brought up good points on his blog. Ask yourself these 2 important question:

  1. Is this a game that you see yourself replaying after the initial playthrough
  2. Do you see yourself, and most others, playing this game 10, 15, 20 years from now?

I'll admit that Galaxy was an amazing game, but like most games nowadays it now sits in its case after finishing it. I even had to quit the game halfway through the Luigi playthrough due to a lost of interest (but I did eventually finish it, unlike Sunshine which I traded back before getting all 120 shines). Galaxy was a great one time experience, but I would have regretted my purchase if not for the fact I picked it up for 30 dollars on sale.

Mario 5, on the other hand, is still a blast months after release (both solo and multiplayer). Unlike Galaxy, I found myself replaying a lot of stages just for fun. I see this game joining the ranks of Mario 3 and still being played a decade from now, unless Nintendo obsoletes it with a far better game.

"I would have regretted my purchase if not for the fact I picked it up for 30 dollars on sale" - you can't be serious. If you stopped halfway in the Luigi playthrough, you must have had around 50 hours of play time. Highest quality play time. If that doesn't justify buying a game for you, I don't know what would.

You see, it's an individual thing - I didn't finish all the bonus levels in NSMBWii yet cause I lost interest.

My "problem" (luxury problem!) with NSMBWii is its lack of atmosphere... I can't quite put my finger on it, but something about it is a bit too Mario-Party-esque. I don't remember Super Mario World being so goofy, with the overworld animations and cut scenes. I understand that Mario games shouldn't have much of a story, that's fine, but I wouldn't mind them building up a little more tension and excitement. Something Mario 3 and Mario World did better, cause they took themselves a bit more seriously.

Still, talking about a 95% game vs. a 100% game.

Currently playing: NSMB (Wii)

Waiting for: Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii), The Last Story (Wii), Golden Sun (DS), Portal 2 (Wii? or OSX), Metroid: Other M (Wii),
... and of course Zelda (Wii)

I have fun with both.

Nsmbwi was more fun, cuz i have friends. Galaxy makes your friends fall asleep(specially with the tacked in co op). Also, after beating SMG(beating bowser-didnt feel like getting more stars), didnt feel like trying anything again. SMB isnt exactly reflex or mkwii in replay neither but if some new friends comes around, we can try some levels at least.

I love both, and IMO are both equally great games. When it comes down to which is more "fun", I can't say. Super Mario Galaxy is mostly for Singleplayer, and New Super Mario Bros Wii for Multiplayer. I might just give it to NSMBWii just because several people can have fun together. This is just my opinion though.

You must have a tough time tying your shoes.

Galaxy definitely. I got all the stars for both mario and Luigi, and I still go back from time to time to just muck around. I never even got all the coins in NSMB. And in 10 years galaxy will still be a classic and NSMBwii will be a footnote. It just doesn't have the heart that the old 2d mario games had. Galaxy has that heart.
