so come on then.... some reviews and impressions and scores out of ten.

I need to play more online and races to comment fully, as I decided to play with the editor first, but so far I'm pretty impressed.

Editor seems really good and breaks down into three elements:

1 - car customization - mainly looks so far as I can tell at this stage

2 - driver customization - just looks

3 - track customization - the big one, and a lot of fun.  Seems very well designed to support everything from easy to complex design ambitions

Focusing on the track editor, you can make something that looks good pretty easily (more so that LBP due to some clever stuff plus the obvious focus of racing over LBP more open structure).   For example:

1 - edit terrain, make some dips and mountains in approx 5 seconds.

2 - lay a track as though driving, easy and you can lay down a nice track very fast

3 - get the editor to 'auto populate' your track with boosts, add trees, buildings, etc.  (this is clever as you jump to a polished looking level without any drawn out effort or time).

4 - have a test drive, have a test, race, etc. without leaving builder

5 - save and publish if you want

Of course, if you want to you can place every tree, warp the angle of the road, etc. and basically take a long time over your track - but I'm impressed you can build something good in a very short time with minimal effort.

As for the racing, seems fun but nothing amazing.  Playing AI is okay in a Mario Kart sort of way, with speed boosters, jumps and pickups to attack opponents with but nothing too astounding although fun enough.  Playing online seems better, but I've only had a couple of races so far so need more time to really get a feel for it.

There's lots of leader boards for times, races, popular tracks, etc. plus a store in place but currently inactive - hello micro-transactions by the look of it.

Publishing levels is very fast and easy, as is downloading levels, plus other content like other players custom karts and driver designs.

Graphics are clean and look pretty good to me, with a distinctive look in the same manner LBP had (albeit a different one).  Even throwing a lot in my track I couldn't seem to cause any major hiccups or slowdown.

Now, so far I only have three gripes, none of which are major:

1 - the load times between major activity feel a little long.  Not terrible, but a little longer than I expected.  Hopefully they'll continue to optimise this as much as possible

2 - frame rate feels a tad slow overall.  Nothing again that leapt out at me but it just felt like it was there.  It almost felt subliminal in you get my drift.

3 - if you play with complex cliffs, etc. then mix them with complex roads you can get the occasional gap in the joins.  Also there is some pop in of objects depending upon density.

Overall though pretty good and certainly my kids loved it, particularly how easily they could create then race on their own tracks.

Looks like the full game will have a career mode plus splitscreen but this was turned off in Beta.

Also, like I say I haven't played with online enough to comment more there, plus with limited ability to race wtih AI I couldn't really judge the AI's capabilities overall.

yeah when i posted my feedback(on here) it was all offline, but like you said, when you do online races it does seem to have a framerate and lag problem for most of the people here, I would also score it a 8.5/10, which is not bad, now just to post our feedback to them so they can fix it

Because this isn't LittleBigRacers and SONY's not going the route of taking one of it's platforms and simply making a racer spin-off hoping that fans of the platformer will enjoy the racer.

Sadly it isn't, for the reason I ranted at. But you're very wrong thinking these games are SOOOO different. In fact, they are rather close, both serve the same audience, the people who are interested in stuff like PLAY. CREATE. SHARE.

And the idea wasn't just put a sackboy into a car, they would have put incentive of buying LittleBigRacing by sharing content between the latter and original LBP, and bringing new users to original first by introducing them to the LBP via racing (which could be of more interesting genre to some)

The thing is that Sony simply doesn't even care about growing up their IPs. They are borned to be niche, and Sony is happy to keep them in niche, that's it.

I'm not sure I agree they don't leverage their IP.  LBP has plenty of Kratos, Helghast skins encouraging recognition and visiblity of their titles.  Mod Nation Racers is Race, Create, Share so is totally aligned with LBP in concept.

I think it made sense for mod nation to have its own art style though, as it needs to be distinctive and have its own identify.

On the other hand I'm sure that when it launches they'll release skins for Mod Nation that match other IP, and adding a Sackboy would be easy as pie so far as I can see.  Already in the Beta I've seen Helghast so there must even be enough 'raw ingredients' in the character editor to come close yourself even without official skins.

I guess they could take it further, but they seem to me to make sure you are well aware of other IP and franchises in these X, Create, Share titles.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Had the FUNNEST SERIES MATCH EVER

me & this other guy caulen221 I think were head on head. He won the first match by like 0.5 seconds

I won the second match by like 1 Second

THEN int he third match I was way ahead of everyone else, but near the end he go the POWER UP, the green one, so he could use a boost & he went right in front of me

on this track theres a big ramp & the karts jump RIGHT before the lap ends! Luckily I had collected 3 of the blue power ups, so as I had 3 of them, they combined to form the blue tornado thing

I unleashed it, it hit him JUST IN TIME, slowed him down & I got to the finish line 0.32 something seconds before him

EPIC GAME! LOVE IT!

9/10 for the beta score
______

P.S I also made a track called "The 4-Levels of madness", it has tunnels, 2 levels of overpasses, a ground level, crazy power ups, crazy places to drift a lot & then boost a lot with an engrossing scenery!

two questions

Is this basically mario kart with a track editor then?

Is it a full price game?

1. Haven't played mario kart extensively, but its really fun & has a very simpl track editior with which you can make complex things too. This is coming from someone who thought LBP's level creator was too time consuming/complex/boring

2. Yes it is & it deserves to be as the full game wll have an extensive career mode too. Split screen racing & much much more.

From what I can read it sounds very much like mario kart....  which is not a bad thing.

Glad the track editor is simple too, I agree with you that the LBP one was way too time consuming.

yeah the track editior is really good, they nailed the "create" in this game, the best thing is you get to "test" the track without even more loading screens (just while I mention loading, I'll tell you that the loading in the beta is HORRENDOUS in most places!!)

in LBP the play part was the best imo, here create really stands out.

I built a decent track, with hils, slopes, mini towns, lots of scenery, obstacles, power ups & so on in 14 minutes flat (it even tells you how ,long you took to build it ). Ofcourse its not masterpece, but for a first try I was impressed to see how easy it was to use, and they have many more months to add features & make it even more easier.

Some beta's nail down purchases for you (uncharted 2 beta), some beta's result in you not wanting to buy said games (MAG beta, Resistance 2 Beta)

This beta is definetely in the "nails down your purchase" category, your missing out :(

but there should be an open beta eventually!

I have played on mario kart loads, the controls for the carts are not a good as mario (but it is designed for kids so....), but they definately are still good. But Modnation is definately as fun as mario, if not more fun!! While a lot of people may say it is a Mario kart clone, The track editor, customisation and chat features make this game stand out from mario kart big time.

Edit: I think i may buy it if I have enough money left over, too many games lol

Yah, the editor is easy to use and create with and I think will see more use than LBP in terms of ratio of owners actually making something.   I like LBP editor but it is pretty deep and to get good results takes a while (which is kind of understandable).  Due to the focus on racing only plus some clever utilities, the editor in MNR is both easy and actually fun to use.  To put that in perspetive I've created levels with Unreal, Hammer and other editors, so wasn't put off by LBP but can see others would be, while I thought editor in MRN was so easy I couldn't imagine anyone not wanting to throw together a quick track.

The game style is very much Mario Kart.

Beta's convinced me as well.  Unless something goes horribly wrong this has gone from mild interest to definate buy.  Also, I've played online a bit more and it's fun (although sometimes a little lag crept in plus some annoying disconnects, but it is a Beta I guess) and pretty adictive.  Like Darth I've had some great races with plenty of last minute drama and exploding drivers (which is a good combination).

Unless Sony are very unlucky this should sell very well.  I recon the fun karting crowd will like it, it's sure to be bought by a fair number of LBP owners I would have thought as it shares the X, Create, Share mantra and ethos, plus it does seem good enough as a game to get good word of mouth and reviews.

So no beta for the US psn? Man that sucks..I was looking at the psn update the other day. Well, its possible we will be getting the Heavy Rain demo, so I'm happy about that.

Come on, US had the beta long enough, now it's our time to enjoy it :)

Game is awesome except for the part where it keeps booting me off, shocks of horrors, my internet connection was perfect today but the game still kept cutting me off (but I still remained on psn) so eventually I gave up for now, might try another time.

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.
