Forums - Sony Discussion - Why do most AVI's and WMV's seem to not work on the PS3?

Not every movie file downloaded is illegal.

Like 1% of what you can find on torrent? You have to be quite naive to think that he was talking about something else.

Actually, you'd be suprised at the amount of stuff on torrent that is actually legal. Of course, a large proportion is illegal, but it's definately more than just 1% of torrents that are legal. More like 30%. And he could have made/burnt the vids himself

Yea I put a lot of acquired movies and TV shows on my PS3 for easy viewing. So I run into these format issues every so often.

Greatness Awaits

PSN:Forevercloud (looking for Soul Sacrifice Partners!!!)

I use Java ps3 media server to stream video to my ps3.

Though I have to disconnect from the internet otherwise the video lag will make it unwatchable.

Disconnect your computer? Or the PS3? I only get lag when trying to watch 1080p material with subtitles.

Actually theres a lot of video that are illegal but do not cause any prejudice to the publisher. Example can be a movie that was filmed back in 1990 that you are no longer able to find and purchase new. Another example would be a japanese movie that was never release in the west. So there is a lot of things that are politically correct to download even if its illegal.

I have two routers, internet comes in to the other one and it has only 1 ethernet port. the ethernet cable goes to the other lan-router which has 4 ethernet ports.

My ps3 and pc are both linked to the lan-router via ethernet cables. Everytime I want to watch something I just shut down the internet-router. So it won't suck the network speed.

And I can stream 1080p videos with subs too with no lag now.

Gigabit LAN router? Or you just set a limit on the Mbit/s?

I have some files that try to play back at about 200 Mbit/s...

the router is speedstream 5450, with four 10/100 Mbps ethernet ports.

I use Best Quality settings for the video playback and I have not limited the speeds.

Guess I'll just play with the setup to see what I can do.

In this case he would've also been able to choose the encoding...
