I'm mostly with those who say if you want to play RTS games play them on PC. There's so much to play on consoles that relative lack of RTS isn't really a major flaw.

Question is: would moving in to the RTS genre generate additional HW sales for the console maker, and profitable game sales for the developer/publisher?

Well, maybe in time. Gaming in general is moving to a place where it isn't confined to the 'computer room'. Your TV/lounge is the hub now, why should we seperate ourselves from the house to game? I guess time will tell.

Also, i think the market is there - as we grow older (i'm 25 now), more people will transfer from PC's to consoles (as we work on a PC all day, why play on one 2!), thus the market may grow.. But yes you are correct, at the moment it's doubtful RTS will move consoles.

uh, I'm older than that and I'm in IT, but I've always been a multiplat gamer who doesn't have a specific favorite genre and enjoy gaming in general so I'll continue to game on PC and consoles.

Fair enough.. I like it all too, just wish there was a few more RTS' to choose from on ps3. I'm too lazy to boot up the pc!

NB: Quality or Hype - that makes for long term gaming enjoyment.

I'm new here, so this may have been discussed previously - however, there's no harm in asking right?

A bran new ps3 (first console ever for me!) was made mine this Christmas, a wonderful occurence. I'm enjoying Oblivion, KZ2 and PixelJunk Monsters immensely...

However, where are the RTS at? Being an avid PC gamer previosuly, i've always enjoyed the rts genre.. from Total Annihilation, C&C to Warcraft and AOE - however i cna't seem to find any RTS on ps3 (apart from Red Alert 3??).

Does anyone know any other worthy RTS games on ps3?
Do you think developers will ever make RTS games for ps3 or is the lack of keyboard/mouse to hard to overcome??

thanks in advance...

Red Alet and tower defense games seem to be about it.  Developers usually code to joypad controllers, which suck for games.  Maybe Supreme Commander 2 might do the trick.

What would people class "Military Madness" on psn as?
Not trying to be smart just wondering.

That is turn-based strategy, and may be about it as far as strategy stuff coming out.  I am not sure if RUSE is coming to the PS3 also, but that is another RTS due to hit consoles.

Seeing as how PS3 has full keyboard and mouse support (See Unreal Tournament III) I don't understand why we haven't seen much RTS on the PS3.

Not many people have such on their PS3s, so they don't include it.  Look at what EA did with Kane's Wrath, for example.  They took out the turn-based world conquest mode because they said "market demographics indicated that there wasn't interest in it"

Just two corrections on some replies:
- Halo Wars is not the only good RTS game on consoles (Pikmin 1+2 and Swords & Soldiers are just 3 other examples).
- Civilization was never an RTS game on any platform and I bet my Sid Meier shrine it never will be.

RTS games on consoles are best if they are developed for the console. Two of the few exceptions to this rule (which I just invented) seem to be Tom Clancy's Endwar and the two Overlord games, which got decent ratings.

There are some good to great RTS games on PSN (I haven't played them, but ratings are good; I think they are all tower defense games except Mushroom Wars? Not sure):

First you say the Civilization series is not an RTS, which is absolutely correct and then you say Overlord is an RTS ?

I don't think so...

It is an RTS the way Pikmin is.

Never played a Pikmin game, but based on your statement I'd say it's not an RTS.

If Overlord is an RTS, then FIFA 10 is one as well. And Counter-Strike !

If you want to revisit the RTS genre, I advise that you revisit PC gaming. The PS3 does have a few titles, most notably Red Alert 3 and EndWar, but the quality and sheer quantity of the titles is nowhere near as high as the home of RTS- the PC. I would say that RTS, MMO and to a certain extent FPS, are the genres that belong on PC, while Fighting, RPG, Action Adventure and similar games are better on consoles.

You'll admit that some sub-types of RPG are better on PC I imagine (or rather better with KB+M control).

Off topic a bit, but I's thinking with the KB+M control available on PS3 (is it not available on 360 too?) they could have released Dragon Age origins on PS3 with the same camera views and controls as the PC version. Could have sold as well or even better than it is at the moment.

A console game with PC controls becomes a PC game. On a bigger screen.

You might as well get it on PC for nearly half the price if you're going to use KB+M, imo.

I don't think so...

Yes, I think so and I'm not the only one:
http://www.mobygames.com/game/overlord_
http://www.thelegacy.de/Museum/77053/

Mobygames and thelegacy are among the better sites on the net when it comes to correctly categorizing games imo. I think "Action, Strategy" is a ggod genre categorization for this game. Of course you can put Overlord in the action adventure genre (like the publisher Codemasters or gamefaqs and many other gaming websites), just like they do with every game nowadays which doesn't fit 100% into one genre, but in my book it's foremost a 3D RTS game. Overlord is a mixture of Pikmin and Dungeon Keeper, which are both RTS games as well.

BTW: The Overlord developer themselves put headlines on their website http://www.climaxgroup.com/  such as: "Overlord Dark Legend - IGN E3 Runner Up Wii Strategy Game" and "IGN names Minions best DS strategy game".

There is really no strategy involved in Overlord or Pikmin, just micromanagement.  It doesn't compare to real strategy games like Total War, Sins of the Solar Empire, and World in Conflict.

Saying Pikmin and Overlord are strategy games is like calling Halo 3 a puzzle game cause you have to hit switches or calling Shadow of the Collusus (Spelling?) a hack and slash cause he uses a sword.  How about calling Resident Evil 4 a fighting game cause Leon kicks sometimes?

PC will be the superior RTS experience.
