Forums - Gaming Discussion - Can Bungie Counter Modern Warfare 2 in Terms of Popularity?

With Halo 3, Bungie has been about on par with the past two Call of Dutys in terms of online activity, and is well aware that the keys to a successful multiplayer are well-crafted maps, a set of weapons that work much like a game of rock-paper-scissors, and constant community support.

Only, the way I see it is that Bungie certainly know how to build a game oozing with quality that has an undeniably solid net code and potentially hours of replayability for gamers to sink their teeth into, but they seem to either completely misunderstand what draws players to games like Modern Warfare 2, or they see it as a style of multiplayer they aren’t interested in emulating.

Throughout the years, Bungie have had relatively minimal ranking systems in their games – whether it be an icon, or a number, neither come close to the comparatively extreme way Modern Warfare 2 incents players to play day-in and day-out. And while I still think Modern Warfare 2 goes overboard with the experience points as they begin to merely serve as a means to the next rank, there still is more Bungie could do in their games with regards to a carrot-and-stick experience points system.

In this day and age, it’s almost rare to come across a game without an experience points system. This is just a guess, but maybe Bungie feel they’re above the shameless shoehorning of experience points systems, and will have their own spin on the concept come this fall.

I’m undoubtedly interested to see how Bungie intends to evolve the multiplayer space, but as for now, only time will tell.

Well, in ranked games, Bungie's ranking system actually means something. It pairs you up with people of similar rank. Bungie's way is an incentive to become a higher rank based on skill. This is in contrast to CoD's system which ranks based basically on playtime.

But, there is a presentation Bungie where they stated what they wanted to do in the next one. Let me dig it up.

Seems they are probably going to add some reward as well as probably keep the ranking to ensure players are on a level playing field.  Also, looks like they might be adding some additional things for reputation and social history.  Probably unlockable items to where and leaderboards.  I honestly don't think they will have unlockable items that affect gameplay.  One of their design leads talked negatively about that aspect of MW2 on their latest podcast.

Will Halo REACH be good enought to be a MW killer ?

This is what I like about them, they are outright & want to make sure they make the best by being harsh on themselves & doing lots of game testing like this!

The final products quality is definetely increased by such behaviour!

^^Exactly, and it doesn't benefit just them. It benefits all who have adopted the matchmaking paradigm and can learn from Bungie's lead.

Halo is still more popular in America, Halo 3 is untouchable in sales here (will be at 8 million soon). I'm sure it has a lot to do with local multiplayer, and I guess the game's style is more appealing. Perhaps the advertising is better here, as well.

Whatever it is, Halo is just not very popular in Europe. Modern Warfare 2 (X360) will already overtake it there with this week's numbers. I don't think Halo has much room for growth left in the Americas, so it all depends on whether Halo can reach (erm) the European audience.

I trust Bungie will come up with something good on the multiplayer end, they must have learned plenty from the last two games. I'm glad JaggedSac pointed out Bungie realizes the problem with MW2's system, it really pisses me off how I have to start out undergeared. I don't wanna play a damn RPG, I bought the game to play a shooter. Give me my M16, now!

Really, unlockables need to go.

Halo is massive in America not so much here in Europe so, think COD is the bigger franchise. Plus COD is Multi-Platform...

YES TO BEER

I don't think they have to wrry about Call of Duty to be honest...Unless they copy COD's style of cinematic SP campaign in which case they will hurt the franchise.

Everyone used to call new FPS games "halo killer" few years back and every game was copying halo blindly hence halo was a target for a lot of resentment. Now that the industry has moved towards copying COD, Halo franchise smells like roses and looks pretty darn original amongst your MAGs, Operation Flahspoints and Medal of Honors
