Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Would it be so bad it Nintendo just made software?

Not to be rude, really not, but is this a joke thread?

I mean of course it would be bad. If Nintendo only made software, they would have to stick with the control schemes of rival consoles.

Nintendo designs hardware and software to work well together. They wouldn't be able to do that if they only designed the software, would they?

Exactly.  I remember back when Mario 64 came out and EGM was questioning how some games didn't work well with the N64 controller.  Nintendo pretty much said "We don't give a fuck!  That controller was made for OUR game."  (it was implied, anyway).

Hmm, let's see.

D-Pad
Shoulder buttons
Analog standard
Rumble
Gameboy
4 player standard
DS (microphone / touch screen)
Wiimote (motion / IR / speaker)

Looks pretty bad. Even you ask, "What if they leave now?"

Well, then who's going to do the innovating in the future? Sega? lol

edit: Let's pretend Nintendo wasn't in the race. In the first 2-3 years of this gen we're stuck between a machine that costs $400-600 dollars, and one that has a failure rate of something like 30%? Ouch.

The advancement that are brought forward by Sony and Microsoft are (basically) obvious evolutions that would come forwards anyways. While Nintendo hasn’t always gone against the grain, Nintendo tends to be the most successful when they are producing a product that the rest of the industry doesn’t believe in; and (as a result) the industry ends up being forced to move in directions no one else will push them in.

It’s kind of hard to believe now after the Nintendo DS and iPod-Touch/iPhone have been so successful, but before the release of the Nintendo DS no one saw the value of a touch screen on a portable device. In a similar fashion, there is no way that Sony would produce their motion control wand or that Microsoft would be releasing Natal if it wasn’t for the success of the Wii; and we wouldn’t see companies trying to release fitness software in high numbers without Wii Fit.

Realistically, without Nintendo forcing the industry to evolve I’m afraid that the same dozen titles would be released every year until everyone got bored and the industry collapsed.

This will show how many people read the OP

I mean from a gamers point of view not the companies.  Of course it would be stupid for them not to make a console when they make so much money of them.   I am also only talking about home consoles.

So Im asking if it is important to you that you have nintendo hardware to play your games on or would it be okay if they went software only and you could play their trademarked games elsewhere?

Yesd because not everybody can afford a bloated console with 60 dollar games

Yes, INCREDIBLY bad.

-No handheld similar to the DS (touch screen + dual screens)
-No console similar to the Wii (motion controls)

And look at Sony and Microsoft trying to copy what Nintendo made 4 years ago with the Nintendo Wii. Microsoft and Sony will give another step forward (thanks to Nintendo).

More competition = more ideas, quality, inovation etc.

Agreed 110%

This would be a HORRIBLE idea!!

Nintendo designs games & builds their hardware around those games

Their games aren't built to suit their hardware, their hardware is built to suit there big, key games (or thats what someone from nintendo said in an interview)

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

Then we wouldn't have anymore Nintendo fanboys and we wouldn't be subjected to anymore Malstrom articles.

Look what happened to Sega when they became third-party. Some hits here and there, but nothing as innovative as PSO, Jet Grind Radio, Shenmue, or Panzer Dragoon

"Pier was a chef, a gifted and respected chef who made millions selling his dishes to the residents of New York City and Boston, he even had a famous jingle playing in those cities that everyone knew by heart. He also had a restaurant in Los Angeles, but not expecting LA to have such a massive population he only used his name on that restaurant and left it to his least capable and cheapest chefs. While his New York restaurant sold kobe beef for $100 and his Boston restaurant sold lobster for $50, his LA restaurant sold cheap hotdogs for $30. Initially these hot dogs sold fairly well because residents of los angeles were starving for good food and hoped that the famous name would denote a high quality, but most were disappointed with what they ate. Seeing the success of his cheap hot dogs in LA, Pier thought "why bother giving Los Angeles quality meats when I can oversell them on cheap hotdogs forever, and since I don't care about the product anyways, why bother advertising them? So Pier continued to only sell cheap hotdogs in LA and was surprised to see that they no longer sold. Pier's conclusion? Residents of Los Angeles don't like food."

"The so-called "hardcore" gamer is a marketing brainwashed, innovation shunting, self-righteous idiot who pays videogame makers far too much money than what is delivered."

Multiplayer console gaming started with the 4 controller slots on the N64 and took off with GoldenEye; one of the greatest games of all time.
