By the way; I'm sure I read last fall that there were nearly 140 million PS2's shipped as of september 1st 2009, with even more shipments does that mean there are 8-10 million PS2's sitting on shelves? I have a feeling that large chunks of sales from Eastern Europe and South America go unchecked, its especially big in parts of Eastern Europe.

PS2 shipments include SCEC (China) btw.  DS don't, as even though iQue is a wholly owned subsidiary, it doesn't publicly report figures and Nintendo doesn't include them.  We don't have iQue GBA figures either.

VGChartz massively undertracks PS2 numbers.


For this contest, i think it's best to go by shipment data for the 2 consoles.

Shipment data isn't consistent since (as I mentioned earlier) SCE includes Chinese sales and Nintendo doesn't.  Plus we don't know "real" PS2 shipment totals anyway since SCE's never given an updated total figure after switching from "production shipment" accounting methods back in 2007.  Any attempt to total "PS2 shipments" will be double counting an unknown amount of units.

Sales trackers are the only way to know actual sales, and we have more than just VGC to go by.  Best and fairest comparison would be using NPD + Enterbrain + Charttrack/GFK imo, which Nintendo always gives out in their annual reports anyway.
