Forums - Nintendo Discussion - IGN Editorial: Blinded by MARIO

Haha IGN is lazy. They don't even take the time to write a smart and actually worthwhile editorial. Take that IGN haha.

As good as Splosion Man is, this is just a joke haha. Maybe if he had actually put time into figuring out why New Super Mario Bros Wii is so good he could have figured out the 2 games aren't in the same ballpark and shouldn't be compared to begin with. But hey I guess IGN is just lazy. They should be more diligent like Nintendo.

So he thinks laggy online, an explosion gimmick, and moe but not nessecarily longer levels make 'splotion man a better game?

How come he doesn't mention level design, playcontrol, or lasting appeal?

I bet he is the same type of gamer who believed that the dismemberment gimmick in Dead Space was a huge innovation that would change gaming forever.

I LOVE ICELAND!

I don't like watching people have breakdowns, so this is actually kind of hard to read.

Somebody having such a negative reaction to a game selling well - to people having fun with it, and their friends buying it as a result - is distressing in and of itself. I winced, reading this.

And the whole "NSMBWii plays just like the DS game" memetic needs to die

werd i played both, and they are different.

but....he having a breakdown because he is trying to get people to see his point, but no one will listen (since it got platformer of the year and all)...i agree with him to some extent though

What exactly do you agree with him on? That New Super Mario Bros. Wii isn't as awesome as sales suggest? That, in fact, it's mediocre? That's the word he assigned to it: "mediocrity".

I couldn't disagree with him more if he were trying to tell me God Hand sucks (ha-HA, IGN...), but that isn't really the point. The man is having a breakdown. In public. He's letting everyone see him tattoo his heart onto his bicep, with all the pettiness and ugliness made plain to the world. I'm embarrassed for him. I'm ashamed for him.

well he is a writer, so he is supposed to write about things pertaining to his opinion and receive hits for the site, so yeah i mean its his job, right now your showing your colors by being ashamed of him because he wants to express his opinion as a writer

and i agree with him on the fact that mario galaxy is top notch stuff nintendo should be doing, not bringing a game that has no online co-op or any more than 4 characters, they should be bringing us some online,  and more characters, maybe a little comical story or something (just examples)....all these things are possible on the wii but the developers played it safe (some call it laziness) with this game forsure. you cannot seriously say that they worked 100 percent on this, and i will go as far as to say that they do not deserve the sales, surely its a great game, but to cash in such an ammount of money for little effort is what annoys me, and it annoys me even more that people dont see that.

Proffesional writers express things... well proffesionally....

the article doesn't quite come off as proffesional... it comes off as well... embarrising.

It reminds me of when one of my friends would drunkenly complain that his band wasn't getting a chance when people with less talent got all the credit and hype.

whats professional about writers writing about games? i think jokes and hahas have to come into play when you write about games.. .

Do you even know what it means to be a professional journalist? Whatever the subject is, politics, economics, cars, sports, games, it doesn't matter what subject there are certain ways of writing. You objectively state facts, tone down any extreme emotions whether they are positive or negative and ffs you do not start whining to the public that in your opinion some other game/team/politician should've come in first.

And frankly it's hard to take you seriously if you believe such hogwash articles to be any good as this one in particular is not good journalism. It's extremely bad, comparable to those tabloids which are read and enjoyed by the...more simple part of society.

If i lose access to this profile as well....I'm done with this site.....You've been warned!!.....whoever you are...

Happy Wii60 user. Me and my family are a perfect example of where hardcore meets casual and together mutate into something awesome.

But I like 'Spolsion Man.....it's hilariously fun.

He gets paid at IGN right?

Also, proffesional writers tell jokes... all the time.  Have you never read a newspaper or ESPN or something.

yes i have >_>

but how proffesional can you be when writing about games....i mean hes trying to give points on how NSMB is not all that good, and gives jokes to back it up, sure some cross the line, but its the way he wants to write it to get his point across

You can be very professional when writing about games.

Look at the writers at ESPN.  Most of them are very proffesional and they're writing about proffesional sports.

proffessional sports are no more a "serious" topic then videogames.

The thing is... he' isn't trying to give points on how NSMB isn't that good... he's having a breakdown.  If he was trying to give points and his opinion on it he would do it in a more proffesional way... which could in fact include jokes.

The article he posted seemed like nothing more then some random breakdown a forum poster here would post.  He should be ashamed at getting paid for writing such a thing.

its not, this editorial is actually boasted by other editors (check out gamescoop podcast)...all of them agree with this editorial and so do i, you may say hes having a breakdown, but he just expressing his opinion and his job entitles him to do so, he brings up GREAT points, whether he has bad jokes or anger issues, his point is still damn good

You couldn't be missing the point harder if you tried...

Proffesionalism has no bearing on what your trying to argue.

You could argue that Hitler was right and do it in a proffesional way.

Around the Network

I am anything but biased towards Mario. I was not excited at all for NSMB Wii. I wanted it to fail.

But I love this game. I love it more every time I play it. Yesterday I accidentally stumbled upon a secret path in World 7 that lead to a completely awesome level I'd never seen before. A game hasn't given me such a feeling of accomplishment in a long time. The level design and deceptively deep mechanics are just brilliant.

I haven't played Splosion Man but NSMB Wii deserves all the praise it gets.

i would take him more seriously if he didn't sound so angry at people having fun. also whats with the trying to put nintendo in a bad light? it makes out that original games are an opportunity cost for mario being marketed

The games arnt even on the same platform for god sake. its not like wii owners are picking NSMB over Splosion man cos its not on their console.

the hate and anger in his tone are just insane.

metacritic: NSMBW 87 Splosion man 84

IGN NA: NSMB 8.9, Splosion man 9.0

IGN UK gave mario a 9.4 and AU gave it a 9.2

even if we narrow it down to the company he works for, a 9.0 is apparently brilliant whilst an 8.9 is mediocre. why should everyone else have the same opinion as him?

I'm going to go ahead and testify that OkeyDokey is telling the truth here

A few weeks ago he was saying that it was good, but not as good as the retro gamers were claiming

@woopah

lol because no one has opinions, whatever number he puts determines the value that we believe that software should have ^_^

This is pretty much how I feel (except the wanting it to fail part).  I really wasn't expecting that much but now I do love this game.

I got the game for Christmas and I'm enjoying at least as much now as I did when i first played it.  I've even tried a few stage speed runs which isn't something i've ever bothered to do in a platformer before.

Also I discoverd the same path (i think) in world seven just the other day, followed by that cool stage.

OT: I actually couldn't care less what IGN has to say these days.  When their values and attitudes towards games are obviously so different to mine there really isn't much point paying attention what they have to say.
