Can your hear that?

Its the sound of stampeding Nintendo PS360 fanboys trolls!

And they're heading towards this very thread!

Run for your lives, no one may dare question Mario or Nintendo!

Fixed

You make it seem like what I said didn't happen

I don't like watching people have breakdowns, so this is actually kind of hard to read.

Somebody having such a negative reaction to a game selling well - to people having fun with it, and their friends buying it as a result - is distressing in and of itself. I winced, reading this.

And the whole "NSMBWii plays just like the DS game" memetic needs to die

werd i played both, and they are different.

but....he having a breakdown because he is trying to get people to see his point, but no one will listen (since it got platformer of the year and all)...i agree with him to some extent though

This is why I only go to IGN for reviews, nothing else

their review staff is excellent, I trust them there

but everything else they do is just........bad

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

Hrm... I... really don't know what to say.

All in all, I hope that 'Splosion Man sells well in the future... and I also hope that New Super Mario Bros. Wii continues to shatter records. There, now everyone (except Damon Hatfield) wins. ^_^

It seems like the NPD meltdowns have finally materialized into editorials, boosted by the fact that their anti-Nintendo tirades have done nothing to alter reality beyond pissing off their fanbase.

somwhere along the line, this guy forgot what gaming is all about

fun

if you can have playing a game then it's done its job

That's fine when you're talking about whether or not to buy a game, but both NSMBWii and Splosion Man were fun, so obviously you have to base GotY off more than "which game is fun"

I do disagree with him on his points other than originality.  From what I've heard Splosion Man's online coop is a nightmare of lag, and comparing 100 levels to 77 does not take into account the length of the levels whatsoever.

you my good sir, just win

Actually he stole his points about 'Splosion Man from me over AIM, so I win.

Don't hate the playa, hate the game.

What exactly do you agree with him on? That New Super Mario Bros. Wii isn't as awesome as sales suggest? That, in fact, it's mediocre? That's the word he assigned to it: "mediocrity".

I couldn't disagree with him more if he were trying to tell me God Hand sucks (ha-HA, IGN...), but that isn't really the point. The man is having a breakdown. In public. He's letting everyone see him tattoo his heart onto his bicep, with all the pettiness and ugliness made plain to the world. I'm embarrassed for him. I'm ashamed for him.

He is right though. Splosion Man has more levels than Mario, so it's a better game.

People do take this stuff too seriously...

It also ignores the main two important aspects of a platformer.

Controls and Level Design.  As we recently talked about, the original Super Mario Brothers still holds up....

What makes it still hold up?  Perfect controls and masterful level design that is often challenging but never cheap... you always have a shot first time around.  There have been plenty of additions to platforming.... however in the end it's all window dressing for controls and level design.

I've yet to play much NSMB Wii... so I can't pass judgement in the regard of level design... but the lack of talk of these two issues makes me think he misses the fundamental value of platformers.
