I'd say western potential was likely the biggest reason MH3 came to Wii over PS3, and that had a lot to do with the sort of support Nintendo put behind the game. We'll see what Sony thinks of MH in the west, if they'll put the same kind of push behind MHP3 or not outside Japan. As for development costs, DS actually would've been more expensive than PSP precisely because of asset reuse. They'd have had to do everything ground up from scratch, while on PSP they could simply reuse a heavy amount of PS2/Wii assets. A 3DS only MH future wouldn't be a dumb move for Japan either, it'd simply drive the fanbase to a new system (a la FFVII). MH essentially built PSP's Japanese market base, not the reverse... PSP needs MH far, far more than MH needs PSP... |
Maybe, but unlike what would happen here, FF became much more popular after the switch. That wouldn't happen here, as the only way to get more popular would be to usurp Pokemon as biggest game in Japan, which I don't think anyone sees happening. A 3DS exclusive move would be dumb if they could multiplat it. Simply switching would just be odd, seeing as they already sell unbelievable numbers. Yeah who knows, maybe Nintendo saw their 3rd party situation as kind of problematic and offered un-Nintendo like support, meaning more like Sony.
