No you can rent it for free for a week. It's like a trial, if you choose to keep it you pay like 3k yen, really cheap. You install the data to a flash drive though and don't need the disc to play... The Wii U version, on the other hand does require the disc.

Here's the kicker, your trial data doesn't save if you choose to keep playing. So you start all over again! Here's the other kicker: you don't need to subscribe to play. They have free play hours called "Kid's Time." And that's why Squeenix gets no subscribers. Not that the player base is that big anyway, most servers are deserted and the entire population failed an event a while back to kill a million slimes. Not enough participants!
