Bayonetta is suddenly niche? In the same genre as Devil May Cry that has sold millions? From the same team that did Devil May Cry 1 and 3? REALLY?!?
I'd chalk this one up to marketing by in large, Darksiders has been promoted at gamestop since mid 2009, Bayonetta has not, Darksiders had some preorder deals, Bayonetta has not, Darksiders has a appealing commercial, Bayonetta does to but a terrible song and makes it a bit less appealing, and Gamestop has had Darksiders on gamestop TV and up on posters in the store for a while.
This isn't the game being marketed at wal-mart or other outlets, gamestop is the outlet for this game and the correlation between marketing there and sales is really strong I'd say.
