Square Enix spent years working on Final Fantasy XIII. The game was shown in prototype form at the E3 gaming expo in 2006, but was not finally released in Japan until December 2009.

According to the game's art director, Isamu Kamikokuryou, a substantial amount of these locations that were already running on actual development hardware ended up on the cutting room floor. How many locations? "More than enough to make another one [game]", says the art director.

For the sale of the finished product, he says, game volume and the entire work's game balance were taken into account for finished product. Square Enix was forced to make the difficult decision to cut these locations from the game.

Those assets are bound to find their way into other Square Enix titles.

Thoughts?

Isn't it obvious? DVD x Blu-Ray decision. Everyone knows what happened. We can only hope for Final Fantasy XV released only on Blu-ray.

Profoundly stupid post. There's this thing called editing. You may also know this as self-censorship. Just because they had a dozen extra locations that could have made it into the game, that doesn't mean that they had a reason to be in the game. Stop trying so hard. The design process is a process. The guy being quoted is the ART DIRECTOR for crying out loud.

If it was really just a case of refining and editing the game then he shouldn't have mentioned "game volume" at all in the interview. That suggests that disk space really was a major issue and influencing factor in the decision to cut the material. I think for everyone this should be annoying because when the multiplat announcement was made Square-Enix suggested nothing would be compromised in the final edition of both versions. It seems that isn't the case and we'll probably have to pay full price for another game at a later date.

Lost Odyssey, a RPG that is not only as long as FFXIII but is not as restrictive, wasn't compromised due to the limitations of DVDs, why does FFXIII get a free pass? Maybe if Square-Enix didn't focus so much on uncompressed audio and video, among other questionable design choices, they wouldn't had run into this hurdle. This is also assuming the content wasn't purposely removed to cheat consumers.

I haven't read evey post, but it seems that everyone has their own reasons for this. I don't know the reason. Maybe it was the low sales of the PS3 and SE got scared that it won't sell as much as they want, so they went multi plat. If this is the case then it's not MS fault.

I personally blame SE themselves. If they removed all the FMVs from the game, they can probably make the game 5 times longer instead of twice. Personlly I think FMVs are the reason for such HUGE useless data.

CONFIRMED! Final Fantasy versus XIII is better!

Lost Odyssey is a great deal shorter than FFXIII from what im hearing. I personally beat LO under 30 hours. FFXIII probably looks better and probably has better load times and a stable framerate. It  is the technically superior game. It's also rumored to be over 40 hours just for the main quest. And whats wrong with uncompressed audio and video? They provide for the best experience avaliable.

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

I think we cannot compare these 2 games. There is a very huge gap between them in terms of production values. Unfortunatelly, when speaking of JRPGs, when can only compare one final fantasy with another. Because of that we have to wait and see Versus XIII and Final Fantasy XV.
