Forums - Gaming Discussion - [Kotaku] There Is Enough Discarded Final Fantasy XIII To Make Another Game

Lost Odyssey was about 4 or 5 discs. Why wouldn't FF13 do the same if it were too much data to fit into 3 discs?

Because apparently Microsoft charges royalties by the amount of Discs a game uses.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

But didn't Microsoft "moneyhat" Square into making FF13 for the 360?  That's like me paying you to mow my lawn but then charging you for using the lawnmower.

MS would clearly waive such charges here.  Unless they were mad SE would have negotiated whatever they wanted out of MS to support the 360 in the West.  Sure, SE probably looked at US 360 numbers and thought 'why not' but clearly they were in the better barganing position vs MS so I doubt MS would charge them a small surcharge that would cause them to change their game.

LO was 4 disks I believe and I'm sure FF could be too without any additional charge.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

I think it's more like you pay me a lawnmower, and i pay you back with part of the money i earn mowing other peoples lawn.

but there is other problems with multiple disks

most of all being the amount of Base-Data you need on the disc, its the data that needs to be the same on every disc, so it can run the game, the engine, character models, enemies..., the bigger a game is, the bigger this content gets, and then there is the space Microsoft requires for Copy-Protection and that is up to 2 GB. what is left can be used for gameplay, voices, movies, different content, but this ultimately limits the way a game can be designed.

Instead of blaming the xbox why did it go multiplat in the first place if they knew this problem would occur. They wasted a few years for nothing>.>

But like all problems in the gaming industry the easiest solution is to blame xbox ~~

No, we could also blame ps3 low sales at the time. They couldn't resist moving the game to be multiplat fearing PS3 was doomed. They didn't have balls to bet on PS3 sales rising and now they are paying for that. They could redeem themselves with Versus XIII and Kingdom Hearts 3 anouncement (PS3 exclusive).

You know, I hate to be defending Microsoft, but we really can't say why content was cut. Some times it's just to help pacing, like how when you buy a DVD there's all those deleted scenes and stuff that the director felt would "slow down the pace" or something.

I'm not saying content cuts has nothing to do with the DVD format, I'm just saying we shouldn't be jumping to conclusions like it's a 100% sure thing. It's a maybe, and let's leave it at that.

If i remember correctly... FF7 had a full copy of the game on each CD... with the only exception being the cutscenes.

and Final Fantasy 6 had the whole game on one cartridge,  ...your Point being?

That for using base data on multiple CDs in the past it was common to just copy the whole thing?

In addition it'd be interesting how much room cinematics take up vs the actual gameplay.

True! that would be extremely interesting!
