Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony Working on New Disc Format, Possibly For PS4

Yeah, because the PSX invented CDs, right?

All the PS2 did was hasten acceptance of DVD as a format for movies. It was going to happen anyway. You want to know the reason people didn't want to move on to DVD? There was only one. It was "I can't record my TV shows on them".

Anyway, holographic disc technology was in development years before the PS3 came out, and won't be ready for like, the better part of a decade. Don't get upset about stuff that won't even happen before your hair starts turning gray.

By the way, the PS3 won't be able to read the highest capacity Blu-ray discs. Sure is future-proof around here.

Um yeah I never said PSX invented anything. and why would I be upset? I am more then happy with current technology(DVD/Blu-Ray) but that's not really relevant.

Than again maybe this was meant as more of a general statement?

Or in other words, Sony: "We didn't learn jack shit from the PS3." A lot of people lambasted them for the high cost of the PS3 at launch, and even to this day, some people still think that the BR disk is unnecessary. (I'm not going to argue for or against the validity of the statement itself.) So rather than trying to keep costs down for the PS4, we're going to introduce yet another media that will keep the price sky high! The PS4 will retail for nine hundred ninety nine US dollars, and all you Sony fanboys will gobble it up even without any games! (Or rather, I can see Kutaragi saying something akin to that, but in more PR-friendly speak.)

No, this much space is not needed. DVDs are getting filled, and becoming a limiting factor, so moving on from that is reasonable. But very few games are filling up a dual-layer BR at the old 50 GB spec, let alone the new 66 GB one. There is no need to rush a new format out for the PS4. Sticking with BR would be a far better choice in my eyes.

The ps3 including bluray was a strategic decision by Sony to deliver mass market bluray. Sony knew it was to expensive but it was a very important move for Sony. I've seen noone who hasnt got an agenda saying bluray wasnt necessary. The new disk format is several years away.

they should work on the streaming rates off of blu-ray discs and stick with it.. (I heard they were supposedly slow to read from or something.. they should fix that and leave the format alone)

While we all would love to have such data capacity on our discs.. the problem with Blu ray is more about speed than anything else.. if the disc can only transfer say 20-25MB/ sec(PS3 is arnd 10MB/sec) its a moot point.. in order to use all those high res textures the drive speeds would have to rise exponentially too..

Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is absurd.

the PS3 is able to read up to the 66.something GB discs that have been made yesterday.. games are barely ever needing more then 25GB and movies barely ever need more then 15..

The PS3 can read as much blu-ray as it needs, and more

Sony has said before that they are developing high-capacity discs for corporate archival purposes, such as providing a backup for database logs or whatever. Just try to look at some other possibilities before assuming that Sony is going to shelve BD with its plans on putting games on what sounds like a $100 disc. Massive overkill is way too expensive lol

Let's put that into perspective.

PS1 came out when CD's were already dominant and games on PCs were already releasing on CDRoms. No real risk here.

PS2 came out when DVDs were already becoming the obvious choice and the PS2 was far cheaper than other DVD players.

Both of these systems were massive success as well since they came out before their rivals (I don't really count Dreamcast, it was already dying due to lack of support from devs) and they took advantage of the already existing format.

PS3 came out to push Bluray and nearly sank Sony because of that as well as forced the mighty Playstation brand to price itself out of market dominance. Had the PS3 came out at 1/2 the price that it launched Sony would have dominated 360 and probably be tied with Wii. (Wii's distinction would still have allowed it to sell very well.)

Sony is not stupid, granted PSPGo goes against that theory, so they won't push the envelope like that again. PS4 will release in 2012 with a bluray drive and many other features to continue the all-in-one entertainment device.

You people are getting more absurd (desperate?) by the day. Nearly sank Sony, give me a break. The ps3's losses were an irrelevnce to Sony as a whole before the economy meltdown. Sony were enjoying record profits.

Now heres a bit of shocking news for you. Bluray being included in ps3 was a strategic decision to win the format wars and after that helping make bluray mainstream. PS3 launching at $600 wasnt a mistake by Sony but a calculated strategic decision which will pay huge dividends for Sony for the next decade. The playstation business is one small part of Sony. Sony decided it had to take hits to help other parts of Sony. And judging by the last few months no serious damage has been done to the playstation brand although Sony have work to do in the US market.
The ps3 has done Sonys dirty work for them and is now on a level footing, i expect a year of megatons.

Sony will be pushing the envelope in all areas they work. It's what the big electronic companies have to do to stay competitive. Sony are very likely working on the next optical disc but i'd imagine 2015 at the earliest for it's introduction. Same with TV's for instance. Sony have next-gen OLED's already on sale. TV's that likely wont go mainstream until 2014 or something like that.

1. PS3 has lost MILLIONS for Sony at a time when Sony's only profitable division was entertainment. With that being a loser the company itself was losing.

2. PS3 took a lot longer than PS1 or PS2 to become a profitable venture and the drasticness of the situation is proven in that the PS3 today is stripped of A LOT of features that were there on launch day. Since realization came in that it wasn't going to fly off shelves at $600.

3. You are right that bluray was purposely added to support its acceptance in the market, and that was a very good decision. However, had bluray lost, PS3 would still be failing massively in terms of cost and Sony would be in serious trouble right now. If you can't recognize that then you are blinded by teh fanboy.

Sony also hoped CELL would be accepted largely and produce big royalties, however, they sold that once they realized it wasn't going anywhere. Had bluray also lost....

4. Playstation is not a small business for Sony. Its been their central home business for more than a decade. MS has Windows and Office, Sony has Bravia and Playstation. The only other part that is larger is their Music/Movie business which is heavily supported by Playstation since people who buy one also play movies/music etc. and especially now with the growth of PSN Store.

5. This year will be full of motion (i.e. copying Nintendo). Next year will be full of PS4 and other nextgen introductions will full launches in 2012.

Sony did not copy nintendo with the motion wand. The development of their motion controller has been going for years now. Heck they preliminary showed 1 to 1 motion control back at sony e3 2005 while demostrating the playstation 3's capabilities. Heck they've even worked on motion control with the eyetoy. I find it very hypocritical for people picking on the motion wand for being a wii remote rip off while ignoring the fact that what natal does has already been done with the eyetoy.
