find a 299$ PC that can out put a game like kz2.

Just as soon as you find me a $199 PS3 to play Call of Duty MW2. Also find me a $299 PS3 that you can type an essay on. Oh and find me a PS3 which comes with an HD display for under $500.

All you do is take a computer which is otherwise useful for other tasks and then pay an additional $99 for the ability to play modern 3D games on it. This computer may or may not have Blu Ray or any other features you deem to be required.

u  actually can, install linux on a fat =). ubuntu runs nice, its faster than my 1gb T5300 core 2 duo =).

open office, abi word, and office 2007 (using wine) work.

and none of your comparison makes sense, fid a 299$ pc that can run a game with graphics like killzone 2, with online etc.

u wont find it.

You won't find a $299 PS3 which can do office/word or internet nearly as well. A PC doesn't have to be as cheap as a PS3 whilst performing better because it does far more and is far more useful than a PS3 in what it does. All those arguments I saw about how the PS3 is better value because it does X function that the Xbox 360 doesn't do are moot when comparing it as a gaming machine against the PC if the advantage in those other functions are on the other foot? Also if you're going to compare functions which don't exist on the retail models how would you feel if I compared a 40GB PS3 with Sixaxis to a 120GB modern Elite 360?

Theres no point in quoting PC prices at the moment as theres quite a shortage because of Windows 7's success and the end of the recession. I noticed practically every PC in the price range was sold out on Newegg.

my does, it have a internet browser, firefox all linux can.

they are not moot, the thing can push graphics far more than your 299$ netbook, yet there is a 299$ 120gb which is smaller, blu ray, internet browser, netflix, playtv, all gaming.

though it's a game console, it was not made for that even if can do it.

and they are not useless, if you dont use them, others will find

Wow, just STFU. We all have PCs/Macs. I have a pc w/a pretty badass graphics card also to make my porn vids run smoothly like the main reason why you have one. We have the PS3 to play PS3 games and its exclusive. You should read the op statement from the beginning before getting sidetracked.

Anyways... I'm gonna get sidetracked also.

How long can your pc last without updating its hardware/software to play PC's latest offering each year? PS3 have a life expectancy of 10 years without modifying its hardware. PC = every year or two. It's not ideal. Good for you if you love your pc. There's nothing wrong with it. You're annoying. Go get a life. Add me on Facebook along with your other fake friends.

Oh yeah, buddy. Btw... we have PCs and something you don't have.. a PS3. (pisses on crap talkers)

Cell processor is a prodigy. Future adaptations will follow the same process within.

Why are you mentioning Linux when NONE of the current PS3s on sale support it? Why is it that a HDD and Blu Ray are 'worth it' whilst being able to run Windows, install files, have control over your own system etc is not?

Why is paying X $ for PS3 performance 'worth it' but not paying XY $ is not for even more performance?

A monkey can do it....

Yes yes... Go play some high end PC games then come back and tell me that your console can handle as many objects, and effect on high settings as a $400 PC.

Never compare a console to the PC. You will get splattered & left to rot under a bus. My Radeon 3850 makes Fallout 3 look like its playing on a XB720 or PS4 and that card is 2 generations old and I have at least 8 mods running that quadruple the number of enemies in game. Last I checked the PS3 had trouble maintaining 30fps in vanilla Fallout 3 at about medium PC settings.

then a game like killzone 2 or uncharted 2 would make your PC sweat.

bad comparsion, lousy port, of a PC developed game.

and killzone 2 dont have tiny maps, they are actually huge.

especially the desert

Killzone 2 and Uncharted 2 would make a reasonably modern PC sweat? Arguably the PS3 has more CPU performance to throw at a anything but arguably they simply throw that extra performance at making the graphics look nicer whilst a PC has all it needs hanging off the PCI-E bus. Even a cheapo $99 card has what it takes to pummel the PS3 in 3D performance and that can be added to any PC with a PCI-E slot, no extra cords or power required.

Wine does not work on the PS3. It only works on x86 based processor architecture. Also Office 2007 doesn't even work properly with Wine.

You asked for it... I think you should change your id to "open mouth insert foot" hehe just kidding ;-p

Check pricewatch.com. You can easily put something together that can play most anything at medium-high setting depending on framerate (equivalent to PS3 and 360 today), for about $300. Better yet, reuse the computer parts you already have at home. You can re-use your chasis, cpu, memory, & drives. You might even be able to use your old mobo if it has a pci-e slot & your psu if the card you select doesnt need extra juice. All you need is a $60-$100 GPU and youre set.

Unfortunatly, the problem with PC's has never been price. Even when the consoles came out you could have had a more powerful PC for less. The problem has always been lack of standardization (to make it like a console and eliminate technical problems), and lack of support from companies that make a lot more money from royalties on propietary consoles. Its just a matter of time however.

Um.  I gotta agree with Xoj here.  I'll use pricewatch el-cheapo prices.

To put together a PC capable of running games of that quality, you'd need:

* a motherboard with a PCIe socket and modern multi-core CPU socket, as well as decent bus speed (you could probably get a reliable one for ~$70)

* A quality case, that cools okay. (~$20-40, depending on how many fans and what GPU you get)

* Sufficient cooling fans (~$10-$30)

* A power supply -- probably 500W-ish for the components needed (~$40)

* a multi-core CPU -- the Cell is faster than all but server-grade i7s, but you can probably get by with emulating a 360 Xenon with your PC instead (~$100)

* Memory -- probably 2GB, since the OS is such a hog on PCs. (~$120)

* a HDD -- a good 120GB is fine. (~$40 secondhand -- you can't really find 120GB drives anymore)

* A DVD or BD drive (~$40 for DVD)

* A Graphics card at least as good as the higher-end ATI HD 3000 series or NVidia 7800 GTX (~$80-$100 new). In the PS3's case, you'd need more horsepower than a 7800 GTX, because the Cell can assist the GPU on a separate bus.  On a 360 you'd need more than a 7800 GTX because the 360s GPU is faster than a 7800 GTX, plain and simple.

*  Possibly an audio card, if your MB doesn't support decent sound (we'll pretend your MB is good enough)

*  A network adapter, if your MB doesn't have (we'll say you are an awesome MB shopper, and it also has this)

* A wireless game controller, which ships in the console boxes, and is included in the console price as well.  We'll use a wired mouse + KB, since they are cheaper than controllers, usually, and PC gamers love to sit 2 feet or less from their tiny monitors, which we aren't including in this price comparison. (~$15 + $15 = $30)

Total (minimums, form above): 70 + 20 + 10 + 40 + 100 + 120 + 40 + 80 + 30 = $510

Kinda... not very close to $300.  Even if my minimums are off by a little, or you are an amazing eBay shopper, you're not going to be able to put together a PC even close to what a PS3 or 360 can do, games-wise, for the same price -- even today.

This is so out of date it's not even funny, 2GB of ram for $120?

http://www.anandtech.com/guides/showdoc.aspx?i=3563&p=2

Base system is $283 w/integrated ATI 3200.  And that's using some good value parts, you could easily go cheaper on that build.

Add in a $100 4850 and you have something that shits all over 360/PS3.  Might be a tad more expensive than 300, but you get something a lot better.
