Forums - Sony Discussion - is the YLOD becoming a bigger problem?

well, from what we've seen, ps3 has somewhere in the 15% failure rate iirc. Pretty bad, but I've noticed that perhaps we are exposed to it more than the average population.

15 percent is all PS3 failures not just YLOD.

Wasn't that a public web survey so not necessarily the most reliable figure, it could be less or more, Sony have never official announced it obviously.  The only figure they did say was something along the lines of YLOD failures accounted for just one percent of all console sold, or something along those lines regarding the BBC watchdog show.  We'll never know for definate so we can only go off anecdotal evidence, which in my experience it is a growing concern on older consoles but equally I could just be seeing the worst case scenario (or you can choose not to believe me which is fair enough).

Either way I think there is no "answer" to this thread and neither stance on whether its a problem growing or not can be obtained from people discussing it further on here.  Perhaps its time for the thread to be locked until some actual substantial evidence is released by some of the media.

Without the breakdown and future repurchases how do you imagine Sony would get anywhere near the number of sales it hopes for on the PS3, not to mention it's previous 2 consoles.

I've had the launch system PS3 and so far it has never given me problems. If it stopped working today, I'd understand and if it stopped working after 13 months of ownership I'd understand as well. I'm not made of money, but the fact is electronics burn out and if I used it excessively (imo 2-3 hours a day) I don't see how I could expect the system to last too long. Take the extra precautions if anything, there are rules such as the 6 inch distance thing and what not.

Electronic failure rate is a function of usage and time, more and more older PS3's will fail with Ylod, thats inescapable. Is it an issue though, probably not. It doesn't seem like a large number, and people seem to be getting a few years out of their older PS3's before they cark it. Plus the BC 60GB PS3's were the most complicated of the PS3's, with the hottest chips using the most power, so are the most likely to fail anyway.

That is never acceptable for any electrical appliance that costs in the region of games consoles.  Thats the sort of attitude that manufacturers try to instill and brainwash into people with their 1 year warranties they provide.  In the UK we have the SOGA to challenge such cases and in most EU countries you can also sue retailers to repair or replace a product upto 2 years after purchase.  Fair enough if your iron fails after 13 months it might be understandable but not a HDTV, console, etc.

sony does fix many of it devices out of warranty. seriously if things are designed correctly they should outlast warranty period by years.

It wasnt a public web survey it was a private insurance firm who paid for consoles to be fixed in or out of warranty.

Hardly super scientific but its the best you will get. Problem is neither SONY or MS have ever confirmed or denied failure rates on their consoles so this pseudo science is all we are left with to get a figure.

I agree its not reliable, but look how many people now treat the 30-50 percent anecdotal failrate of the 360 as irrefutable.

I know that they do from time to time fix devices out of warranty for free, I wasn't having a dig just to clarify .   Lets not forget the 360 3 year guarantee isn't a true warranty as it only covers 2 faults too.

@Cypher - Thanks for clarifying where the figure came from, there have been a lot of those figures banded about and I couldn't remember which it was.  I should really have said that neither Sony or Microsoft have ever announced official figures, not just detailed Sony but I think I did just because the thread is regarding the PS3 and I didn't want to go off topic with RROD talk.

damn, I have a 60gig model. Hopefully it will not break anytime soon. I guess I should back up my saves thou:)

You don´t need to backup, just plug your HD on other PS3 and you have the same Ps3, as I read posts around, it only happens if you are playing more than 3 hours each day.. it´s a lot of time!

PSN: franco-br
MGS4, GH, MW2, GT5p, WipeoutHD, etc..etc..
