Forums - Sony Discussion - Why didn't Sony hype their wiimote at CES this year?

The only reason Sony did not show off the wand at CES was because of 3D. As I siad above, they wanted to show they are the leaders in 3D. The Playstations job at CES was to prove that. PS3 is the first 3D source provider in the market, with games, movies, and music videos. It also will be the platfrom for digital delivery, of content to all Sony devices.

As others have said, Sony has a massive catalogue of products compared to Microsoft. Now is not the time and place for the Wand to be showed. For that they have Dice February, GDC March, PS Gamers Day May, E3 June.

Natal vs PS Motion

CES has given me a better insight on Natal, and I am way less impressed now. The ability to track movment at 30fps is going be a massive letdown. PS2's Eye Toy tracked at that speed, and that was one of its biggest problems. With PSEYE Sony's first and formost goal was the ability to track faster. The PSEYE can track at 120fps giving the player perfect 1 to 1 control. That is why the movment at last years E3 was so much better on PS motion than Natal. That is why PS Motion will be the best motion controller for gamers this generation.

With that said, I am still not a big fan of motion controls, and I do not think that either of the new techs will do anything but give people a option to the Wii. What it is really going to come down to is who makes the better software to take advantage of what they have. I will be getting both day one to support the development of new tech, and we willl see were things go from there.

Stop hate, let others live the life they were given. Everyone has their problems, and no one should have to feel ashamed for the way they were born. Be proud of who you are, encourage others to be proud of themselves. Learn, research, absorb everything around you. Nothing is meaningless, a purpose is placed on everything no matter how you perceive it. Discover how to love, and share that love with everything that you encounter. Help make existence a beautiful thing.

CES - hype 3d
GDC - talk about the gem being the first step to 3d
E3 - launch the gem and go 3d BEST OF BOTH WORLDS

People keep talking about e3, but isn't the wand supposed to be out by then?

Time for hype

Sony knows how to prioritize, this is obviously not the time to hype it up yet.

I think this is going to be delayed. Everything about this project has seemed rushed and all the demos have had no polish. That's a telltale sign of early development, not a product nearing launch stage.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

First off; the Sony Wiimote?

Second; maybe they realize its not going to be the second coming of christ. If they want it to be popular with the crowd outside of Vgchartz users and those like us, CES hyping won't be much use to them seeing as CES isn't exactly the epitome of casual coverage and insight.

It's the exact same thing in theory, it just adds more accuracy to the sensing. It basically is a Wii-mote with a camera instead of a sensor bar. Why should we use Sony's arbitrary rebranding of a device to refer to it when we have been using the device already, for years?

Also, Sony should have at LEAST rebranded it. WTH? We are still calling it the Sony wand? At least MS PR is smart enough to give their thing a name, so people can talk about it.

Also, I think that the Sony Wii-mote not being shown at CES this year is sending a very clear message:

Sony is doing the Wand thing, so they won't be left out of the motion-control race. It was a reaction to Natal, and it's not really a focus of the company going forward. I wouldn't be surprised if you saw a LOT less support for this from Sony than either of the other companies are throwing behind their motion control devices. This is a backburner second string project for Sony, or else they would show it more prominantly. Either that, or they are racing to get it finished and in a workable state.

NAh,

from a french web site that got something from a guy inside Sony :

there are a lot of discussion about what to do with the controller and they still didnt give it a proper name

they are also a bit late and targetting a late 2010 release that should be on par with Natal

Time to Work !

I initially thought CES should have had a wand aspect to it. But after thinking about it a while I came to the conclusion that an expo that is broadly focussed on the wider electronics arena wouldn't be the right place to kick off the intense marketing. The gaming focussed expos are the places to put in serious hyping efforts and a late pring/early summer launch gives Sony 2 expos to start generating excitement, showcasing launch games and demonstrating further potential. A demo booth for casual titles and a demo booth for "hard core" gaming will get the tounges wagging, IF they can put some compelling software on display. But the compelling software HAS to be Wand control only, not optional sixaxis. People have got to want the game and thereby need to get the Wand to play it.
