Forums - Gaming Discussion - Ballmer's Halo comments at CES

"What Star Wars is to film and what Harry Potter is to fantasy books, Halo is to the gaming industry," Steve Ballmer, Microsoft CEO, at CES 2010.

Me thinks he doth exaggerate a bit much on the importance of Halo in the culture.

Anyone else have opinions?

I am Mario.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

I would say Mario is the equivalent with Master Chief coming 2nd probably

he's not far off in terms of following but there's still a long way to go.

Xbox One: What are you doing Dave?

Over the top comment by Ballmer, nah that can't be.

As much as I am loving Halo (just nearing completion of the first game, and will play 2, 3, ODST and Wars soon), I doubt anyone would consider it as important for gaming overall as he states.  The gaming equivalent of Star Wars and Harry Potter will be Mario, while the gaming equivalent of Citizen Kane and Tolkien's Middle Earth trilogy will be Metal Gear Solid.  One could argue for Zelda or Final Fantasy as one of the two as well, but it's got to be one of those long running series.

He is the CEO of Microsoft, I don't think you should expect something objective from him.

Replace "gaming industry" with "fps genre" and you got it right Mr. Ballmer.

I think it's accurate, as Star Wars is big, but not universaly loved by all audiences. Halo is big but not big like a Mario game that apeals to more types of people.

They are equivalent, they are all over hyped, over advertised dribble.

Yeah I went there

Ask me about being an elitist jerk

Time for hype

This can be true "maybe" for in NA. And btw, he missed all three... Replace film and book with Twilight :D

MY HYPE LIST: 1) Gran Turismo 5; 2) Civilization V; 3) Starcraft II; 4) The Last Guardian; 5) Metal Gear Solid: Rising

The word you were looking for is "drivel", and you're wrong.
