Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Epic Mickey 2.5M LTD?

1M min. 2M max.

The Mickey name will generate a lot of interest.

Mike from Morgantown

I am Mario.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

Ok, first let me say sorry for amy terminology errors such as LTD. In hindsight it makes no sense, though everyone seems to understand my meaning via context, which is the most important part of communication. Also, if my internet vernacular ie. Market the hell out of, puts you off I am sorry, I never knew I was still in English class.

More importantly Mickey's last adventure game sold 1.21M copies on the SNES which is not a bad number. I would argue that mickey is more popular now than back then due to Disney Tokyo and other disney projects in the past 15-20 years. Also Warren Spector is someone who seemingly has vision and is able to transform genre's successfully, at least critically. Finally I do believe that the games release period is beneficial, as the Wii has at least one large ladt christmas season left in my eyes.

Wanna make a bet Soriku? I see 2 million as a very high end for Epic Mickey, so no greater than 2.25 million a fair bet?

Demotruk this isn't possible for you to win unless you set dow a timeframe

I'm sorry, but I have no idea what the big idea is about that game. Everything about it looks bad and generic.

The concept art they showed was interesting I guess, but I have no idea why people flipped over it. Still though, some people like certain things, so it's cool that they get excited about it.

And then they released those screenshots.

Those screenshots almost made Cruise'n look good. Why again are people so excited about this?

Many years ago, i remember the reaction to the first "Wind Waker" screenshots... i don't say your reaction is exactly the same, but never forget that a game truly lives when in motion... and in this example, Wind Waker still remains one of the most gorgeous "cartoony" game ever, at least in my humble opinion of cartoon lover: cos' even today, there are still many people to claim it's an horrible game... and anyway, these people don't even mention the gameplay and controls, which were perfect: a great experience, and still my favourite game to this day...

Now, what i'm goin' to say is not only about your comment, twesterm, but about most pessimistic comments i may find here, and everywhere when it comes to "hyped future Wii games": usually, the hype is for games with a very niche style, not many hours of gameplay, and in the end, not really THAT good: i'm thinking about the Conduit and Madworld here...

But in the case of Epic Mickey, this is maybe the first time that an original and exclusive, BIG BUDGET third party game is released on Wii... the only other example i can think about so far (after three years!) is the next WM+ Red Steel...

So, it's always nice to have a critical view, but some people should learn to be more positive, and a least show a little bit of respect when real efforts are made to deliver the goods on Wii... if only more game creators could try to match the quality (and budget) of the best Nintendo titles, then at least, some would succeed from time to time...

Spector is the only one trying, and we still don't have enough infos and feedback to dismiss his efforts yet... but as i've already written above, a game influenced by Zelda and Okami, and made by a great game designer like him, can't be THAT bad...

Plus, it's not like japanese RPG's or western FPS: a game in that vein comes once every couple of years... another reason to wish it's great, if like me, this is EXACTLY your favourite genre in gaming...

The thing about Windwaker though is it always looked good, the people that said it didn't just sucked.

Those Epic Mickey screens though, God, they just looked so bad.  I really have no idea why they would ever release those.

True, but it would be quite expectable for it to sell over a long time, and it's not even going to release for some months, so Soriku, let's say I win when it's reasonably clear it won't reach 2.25 million? ie. when we can both agree it's almost certainly not going to happen.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

A few years ago, many people on VGC predicted that Mario & Sonic Olympics would barely sell 2 million: no chance in hell, never gonna be a massive success, etc, etc... look what happened...

Now, i don't say that this game will have the same fate: it will depend on its quality, and the attention it'll get... not on gaming websites, but in the most popular medias: TV, general press...

If the game's good, and i mean "90+ good" and AAA status and so on, it will sell like madness, and will do between 2 and 5 millions, easily... otherwise, if it's "just" good (80+ and many good critics anyway), it will be a niche success, and will sell between 1 and 2 million...

If it's average or bad, then there's no point talking about its future success...
but i don't think that will happen when the game's creator usually has a lot of talent and also says that Zelda and Okami were his main influences here... :)

I actually don't think quality would matter THAT MUCH. Both Mario & Sonic Olympic games (summer and winter) did not receive good reviews and they are big sellers mainly because of the Mario & Sonic name. Hannah Montana game does not good review either and yet it sold 1.2 mil based on the Hannah Montana name. I think this game will sell based on Mickey name alone (and perhaps Mickey on the cover) regardless reviews, especially to the so called casual gamers. With Spector making the game, it's just the added bonus for the so called core gamers.

If de Blob can sell 750K on Wii and Brutal Legend can sell 850K in two month on HD twins, I don't see why Epic Mickey wouldn't clear 1 mil with Mickey's brand name. However, we'll have to wait and see on the 2.5 mil target.

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

Epic Mickey selling will depend on this question. "Have I played it before" and "hey this is like...". If it is the case where I have played Epic Mickey before. Then it will depend if people are bored of the game or want more of it.

Since the game play style is somewhat open to 2d platforming and 3d something i'm going to wait.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

Did some hunting around and found, found some German site that had a presentation by W.S. that was about 30 minutes long. Sorry I can't remember the site but this was the impression I got:

First of all, you can definitely tell the animation is being helped along by Disney Animation and Pixar, because it's pretty damned impressive. Second, he was saying that they have a lot of the in-game work is looking more and more like the concept art, so it's definitely an ever evolving work in progress.

There's a lot of different groups involved with this and the game is one of the first parts of a company-wide push to bring take Mickey from being just a mascot back to a real and active character.

No way in hell is Disney going to let this game bomb.

I have faith it'll do well since Warren Spector's work has a few slots in my top 10 games of all time. Not to mention having some of the most innovative, best, and atmospheric games ever. I mean good god:
Wing Commander
Deus Ex
System Shock
Ultima
Thief

The guy's not afraid to mash different genres together or just create a new one if nothing available suits him.

Unfortunately my prediction powers suck, so I'm not going to throw out a number, but expect to find ads for this everywhere. Don't forget Disney isn't just Disney--it's ABC, Steve Jobs, Marvel, not to mention ads will probably show up all over in Disney stores and on DVDs and who knows what else.

Argh!! When will people stop calling 'lifetime' sales LTD. It's ticking me off! LTD means LIFE TO DATE and only applies to released games, meaning the number of copies sold from release until now. 'Lifetime' sales can be applied to future games, and refers to the total sales a game has sold or will sell, from release until it stops selling. Stop confusing the 2, people!

OT: Who knows, we know next to nothing about the game. Sure Mickey Mouse is a strong brand, but it's also a 3rd party Wii game, plus we don't know how big its appeal will be. It could be a hit, could also be a major bomb.

If they want it to move, they better start letting people know about it. I hadn't even heard of it up until a couple of weeks ago and I spend a few hours every day browsing game related news.

Eh, the game is a long way off, there's no rush. NSMB Wii wasn't even revealed until 5 months before release date.

As for 2.5mil, no problem. Not only is Disney backing the game, this is Mickey Mouse we're talking about here, by Warren Spector! Obviously we'd need more info on the game to know for sure, but at the very least we know it'll be a quality game based around a well-known IP. It's a perfect fit on the Wii!

how many Wii owners have heard of Warren Spector??

and frankly, how many Wii owners have seen that Mickey design?

I see no reason why this game will push 2 million, breaking a million would be a good win for a third party new IP.

"New IP" NEW IP?

This is Mickey Mouse that we're talking about.

I LOVE ICELAND!
