In 2000-2001 everyone was under the impression that PS2 sales will suck, that xbox and Nintendo will win the generation.
Example:
Don't buy that PlayStation

I am not saying that the PS3 will end like the PS2 did I am just saying that I hear a lot of the same stuff like last generation and PS2 had a concurrent SEGA Dreamcast.
Edit: and it annoys me that people forget the DC. It is the perfect example of a console with fucking bad sales but with good games that lot of DC owners never will forgot. |
First of all, after a year of sales both the PS1 and PS2 looked fantastic. Their pre-launch hype, at that point, was irrelevant. Just like the PS3's pre-launch hype is irrelevant now.
Secondly, the general public perception when the PS2 was released was that the PS2 was the way to go. More hardcore and well informed gamers may have been interested in the Xbox because it was (1) new and (2) technologically superior, but the PS2 had far more interest among the general population.
Finally, third party support for the PS2 a year into its life cycle was great and improving, not weaker and decreasing like it is with the PS3. There was clearly an up-and-coming vibe with the PS2 a year in, developers were excited about the userbase, etc. With the PS3, developers are complaining about the userbase.
Looking at the PS3 all by itself paints a pretty damning picture, but if you look at the PS3 relative to its current competition: the Wii and the Xbox 360, things are even worse. The PS2 took the lead from the dreamcast quickly and never looked back. Sales dominated the Xbox and gamecube very quickly. This time around, things are very much the opposite -- the PS3 is selling very slowly, even after multiple price cuts and bundles within the first year. It's top end games this holiday season (R&C, Heavenly Sword, Lair) can have their sales combined and still end up with poor numbers for a single game.
Its competition, on the other hand, is doing much better than ever before. The Xbox 360 has more third party support than Microsoft has ever enjoyed before and it sells very well during the holiday season and with big releases. Games sell very well. The Wii is still selling out all over America despite pushing what looks to be well over 500k in a 4 week period. Games are selling all right, but the big news is that third parties are all over the Wii including moving large online-based projects like Monster Hunter 3 from the PS3 to the Wii. Financially, the Wii is far easier to profit on than the PS3, even for high end games.
You can cherry pick one factoid or another, but the bottom line is that the PS3 is doing terrible. And to kick Sony while their down, HD-DVD has become extremely aggressive and is now selling tons of units in the US to go with good sales in Europe.
