Watching the latest leaked vids and watching different forums and people's individuals reactions to the latest gameplay movies, i can't help but say that my expectations for the game has been lowered.

Granted, i was very skeptical about the game at first and although i am now a tad bit on the optimistic side, i can't help but say that critical reception for this game will be mixed (mixed meaning low 80s, high 70s) with a 10 on graphics, and a mere 7 for gameplay, and maybe an 8 for the "innovation" part. I would like to be proven wrong, but I think the graphics will be one major thing that will save this game from mediocrity at worst, and at best, it will carve out a niche audience for this movie-game fusion genre (which will include me).  =]

First of all Heavy Rain is not a video game. It was never meant to be a video game and it never will be. The dev said himself it isn't a videogame and the title was inspired by his viewing of Pixars 'Up' with his children and wanted to make a movie title for mature adults that people in their 40's like himself can view without gameplay complications and have an effect on the lives of main protagonists. This IS an interactive mature title that people over the age of 40 should be attracted to, which is why he isn't expecting it to sell amazingly well. He said it was a game, but I knew better and he proved me right when he said it is longer a game. When he told me about his inspiration it sealed the deal.

really? its not a video game? why would they market it as not a video game anyway? if its strictly an interactive movie, it will never sell at 60 dollars. i personally hope the game will play like a video game even if its really different.

Did you see what I wrote about what the dev Cage said?  He said it is no longer a video game and I totally agree with him as well on that. Actually I never thought it was a video game. Everything is predetermined, you just have to put in the button command and save your characters life while the story unfolds or die and move on to the next player. It's that simple. This will probably be the fastest title i'll ever finish because of what it is. In that respect, is it worth 60 dollars? I dunno....thats up to you, but I am not buying it. It's not expected to sell very well anyway.

I agree with this completely. Heavy Rain is an interactive movie. Dragon's Lair, basically.

Anyway STAGE, how can u say that Cage was inspired by Up, as Up is a movie only one year old while Heay Rain has been in development for like four years?

I can't wait for this game

A buddy of mine has been in the internal beta in QD's studio in Paris, he plays hundreds of games and is very critical, and he really enjoyed it.

Besides, it's cool to have something new for once

For Heavy Rain to be like Dragon's Lair the game would have to end everytime you fucked up, which it doesn't.  It's like if in Mass Effect 2 everytime you said something wrong to someone they shot and killed you and you had to restart the entire game.  You understate the massive amount of work the developer has put into making every single possible outcome by comparing the two.  If it was like Dragon's Lair it would've been released already.

Well maybe that what turned the direction of the the game around. He said he was watching Up with his son and said it had such a great ending which could be interpreted in so many ways. David Cage also stated that Adventure games are dead.

^ U shuld watch the last gameplay trailers CGI.

There's a long sequence which is exactly like STAGE described: a long sequence where icons on the screen direct you to press buttons in order for the movie to procede.

When I saw it the only thing that came to my mind was Dragon's Lair. And honestly I thought it was a bit ridiculous and I was disappointed, having been impressed by Heavy Rain for quite a while.

Dude, it's an adventure game. Give it up. And I don't see why it's an insult to compare a game to Heavy Rain like it's some sort of garbage. I would say that it's not correct to compare two games of different genres.

But then again, you can argue that an RPG at its core is an adventure game with statistics based combat.

Since when in your mind did Heavy Rain become an action adventure game to you? Since when did Cage say it was? He stated in his mind he doesn't even think its a video game anymore. I've been in agreement with this since before he even said it.

Where in his post does it say ACTION adventure?

Quotes from David Cage in Game Informer:

"I dont think Heavy Rain belongs to the adventure genre, although it is about story and characters,"

"I dont know to what genre the game belongs."

*sigh* Ok since nobody has responded to me, I'll set the discussion:

What do you guys consider to be an adventure game?

Here's a hypothetical one:

Title: Akvod's adventure!

Summary: You play as Akvod, and explore a world (reminiscent of Pokemon in terms of graphics and visuals), in order to thwart the trolls of VGChartz land (There is no combat game play, or at least a serious focus on such gameplay found in RPGs).

You have many ways of discovering the mystery of the VGChartz. You can talk to people, and choose what to say. You can decide to go left or right at a cross road. You can choose to knock on a door or kick it down. These are all chosen by a menu when you press the interact button.

You have multiple endings.

Now compare to Heavy Rain's gameplay videos.

You dont start Mass Effect from scratch if you piss someone off in dialogue and get shot.

And you don't start Heavy Rain from scratch if you do the same.  That's why it was an analogy to help you understand the difference between Dragon's Lair and Heavy Rain.

When I saw the gameplay videos and judged that it fit under the basic definition of an adventure game. I'll use the Wikipedia definition which I think fits pretty nicely: An adventure game is a video game in which the player assumes the role of protagonist in an interactive story that is driven by exploration and puzzle-solving instead of physical challenges such as combat.

Adventure games have a very relaxed criteria. You hate Heavy Rain because you consider it to be just an interactive movie? You'll fucking hate Visual Novels then:
