Forums - Sony Discussion - Uncharted 2 ? Over hyped ?

That's funny, I'd like the exact opposite! Run n' gun is the fun, all else take a seat! Any interactions with the enemies are cool, so I also like the stealth. The platforming sections annoy me, as they offer no challenge at all.

On topic, I do think it's a little overhyped. I definitely don't think it's anything like the "best game ever," though it does imitate movies better than any game I've seen - if that's your thing, I suppose. It just drives me nuts how often control is taken away from you for cinematic effect.

Fighting in a high floor on a building that's collapsing is awesome! However, platforms falling under you and being forced to watch Drake jump or roll away from helicopter fire gets tiring. I just wish you could skip the in-game "cutscenes".

I agree with pretty much all that. I found the simpler parts of the game to be the best but you're not alone as a biometric study showed that simpler gameplay which does the basics well is more engaging on a whole than more complicated bits, i.e. run and gun. Too bad the links dead. Its another pet theory of mine that engaging games with simpler gameplay sell better and im watching Uncharted 2s sales closely because of it.

B) One giant addition to gameplay was the fact that you could shoot WHILE platforming.

Real time weapon change in Genji: Days Of The Blade really started it all. I feel Uncharted 2 really takes that mechanic and adds so much more to it. Real time weapon change whilst hanging from a rockface. It brings tears to my eyes! But we must not forget which innovative PS3 game really started it all.

i enjoyed assassins creed 2 more

The was possibly overhyped, but that is subjective (at least until www.MetaHype.com launches).

I think when people are searching for tweaks here and there, you know the game was excellent. The only thing I would like is if there was a seperate control action for rolling and and taking cover. The amount of times in muliplayer when I am trying to roll away from someone shooting at me, only to take cover with my back facing them... but like I said.

Few more puzzles (ala Tomb Raider early days) and this is really 3rd person action adventure perfection I think.

Let's see:

A. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune had no stealth, at all.

B. The platforming, while pretty much the same, was more dynamic and frequent.

C. The way grenades are tossed was completely different.

For things to be "exactly the same", the game play would have to remain unchaenged. Uncharted 2 plays different than Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, though they are still very similar.

Reminds me of when people claimed Gears of War 2 was exactly the same as the first. It wasn't, the speed of the game alone made it feel different, even if it was similar to the first one.

A) Never tried stealth in the first game. Maybe it was possible, but because the game didn't hint it nobody actually tried it ?

It's not like you can beat the game without been seen at all. So yeah I correct myself the game is 95% identical gameplay wise.

B) As for the platforming parts, there were some chapters in the first game where you jumped and climbed more than in other chapters and I don't see the difference here. The platforming mechanics are the same.

C) Thank god they changed that, but honestly that's just saying the gameplay is totally different because they added a new weapon. It may be true, but that hardly makes any difference and should be besides that a standard for sequels.

Carl made a better point though. The change of the camera angle is a much better addition to the game than anything you said. (I guess that was what he meant with "aiming") I can't see how the cover mechanics or the shooting has improved though.

It's been a while since I've played Gears and Gears 2, but yeah AFAIR they were the same gameplay wise.

A) Stealth was not possible in the first

B) One giant addition to gameplay was the fact that you could shoot WHILE platforming. In the first there were two sections, shooting, and platforming. In the second they are mixed as well which changes up the game quite a lot.

C) Already been said

D) Melee Fighting system was switched up (though I liked the first games brutal combo better)

E) Cover Mechanics were improved to allow sliding into cover, knocking objects over to create cover, remaining in cover while turning corners(might be in the first but I never saw it happen)

I'm pretty sure I did that already in the first game.

Never used hand to hand combat in the first, because I think it sucks.

Anyway the differences are so minor that it doesn't matter A true change in gameplay can only be seen when playing Killzone 1 and then Killzone 2 afterwards or Burnout Revenge and then Burnout Paradise.

Uncharted series has the same gameplay, Gears of War series has the same gameplay, Call of Duty series the same gameplay and so on.

The main differences weren't in the mechanics of the gameplay (although there were some improvements in that area) but in the main level and game design. The platforming sections were more puzzle based and whilst still simplistic compared to Tomb Raider, were a vast improvements.

The mix of platforming, stealth and platforming, all in the same section of a level (stealthily climb, take out some enemies, get to a good vantage point and snipe the remainder) was much better than the endless stream of enemies after landing on the ground in the first one. There was far more variety in the game design.

Obviously, the addition of a true stealth system added to the game mechanics, and everything else was tweaked to near perfection.

Perhaps slightly overhyped. No game is perfect.

It's the game of the gen thus far for me though.

I thought the first Uncharted was a mediocre game with beautiful graphics and thats why i didn't buy U2, but my friend urged me to play it and let me borrow his copy, it was so good i bought the game 2 days later, a incredible improvement over the first.

If a game lives up to expectations, it certainly isn't overhyped. If anything, I thought it surpassed even the highest expectations placed on it. After all, the first one was a great game, without a doubt, but it was 'just' a great game without any real lasting relevance in gaming history. U2 feels like a completely different experience. The cinematic feeling is epic, and it's the most engaging game I've played in a long time. The fact that Naughty Dog crafted one of the most highly regarded games of the generation after the mere greatness of the original deserves all the praise, and more, than they've been received thus far. I don't think anyone could've predicted that it would become the premiere action/adventure experience available on consoles, that all future games in the genre will be compared too.

It's all about the game.

I don't really think it was, but I didn't get that epic journey feeling I got in God of War 2 or Metal Gear Solid 4 after I beat it though. So Metal Gear Solid 4 will remain my favorite Playstation 3 game... until God of War 3 comes out that is.

Odd. Future. Wolf. Gang. Kill. Em. All. OFWGKTA Don't give a fuck!

Fuck Steve Harvey. FREE EARL!

Final Fantasy Versus XIII will be the GREATEST game EVER made!!!

I'd take a bullet for Square-Enix!

It's an amazing game but I think it's a bit overhyped.
