Age of Empires 1 was one of my first PC games.
I played the heck out of it as a kid.
AoE 2 was fun as well, but not as much as AoE1.
AoE 3 was like 2, good (I loved the setting) but not as great as 1.
Then theres Mythology...

Rise of Rome IS AoE? did i miss something? |
No, I don't think you missed a thing, not sure what guiduc is on about.
In answer to your first question, yes, yes I did. I loved making massive armies of Roman swordsmen, especially with the Barracks tech that made them all worth only 1/2 towards the pop cap.
Last time I played AoE1 was against my brother. I was Egyptian, he was Hittite. He attacked me before I had much of my army together. So I built a temple out of his view and made a load of priests to convert his army. "Hoyo hoyo! Nineveh!" Good times! The most dreadful sound in the game... when you're on the receiving end, lol.

AOE 2 was great if you liked to perfect core skills like micro, economy, build orders etc. Brutal game, if that boar killed your villager in AOE2 you're tempted to resign as its very hard to come back once behind unless you can pull off an epic raid in the third age or something. |
LOL! So true. Such memories...
Age of Empires II was simply a fantastic game. I still play it online.
AoE1/AoE2 = WIN (AoE2 is teh best!!)
AoE3 = Fail IMO
AoM = Liked it more than AoE3
Halo Wars = Epic Fail!! (IMO), I expected way better from ES.

I take Empire Earth 3d graphics over that cartoony look. I played the game in and out and it was very balanced. Far more that most RTS I play and I play a lot. No RTS to this day hase given me the depth of Empire Earth. I played the campaigns and some were ok others I dont think I even finished and the single player was utterly boring. The game shined in the online aspect. The custom civ and the amount of epochs along with the custom scenarios made the game better than anything else I have touched. This includes legends like AoE and Starcraft. It is a much more in depth RTS than it appears, not for likes of a casual RTS player but someone who is willing to devote hours among hours perfecting a strategy. |
The graphics in AoE are not cartoony at all. Just 2D and one of the most beautiful 2D graphics I might add.
The only thing that was really impressive in Empire Earth is the amount of epochs in the game.
