I would've kicked you the hell out of my store :P

Do stores get more... how is it called... "revenue" from PS3 games? Or are they just fanboys?

they do

also store employ is probably trying to get more points for the sony rewards program. More points they earn by selling Sony products the more things Sony will give them. Like 1 million Reward points = ford mustang with a PS3 entertainment system setup built in.

*BZZT* WRONG, As a former Gamestop employee I must point out that they encourage Wii sales because when they sell a Wii they recieve a minor profit, GameStop buys PS3's for 500 dollars and sells PS3's for 500 dollars. They encourage you to sell lower priced systems if a customer is torn to gain their trust as well.

You are a former GS employee, not a current one so you don't have the exact breakdown of what GS pays/profit for each game system any longer. Most regular employees (for most retail stores) do not have access to actual "purchase price" that a company pays for an item.  A manager, sure, they may have the Warehouse Cost, but that may not be completely accurate price as far as what was paid, it could be an arbitrary number they place on an item to affect stores P/L.    Also, there are now $399.99 PS3's and there is no way a store would buy those from Sony for $500.    In many of the game stores it will vary by the employees on what system they prefer and like better and what they actually encourage.   In a game store your profit comes from accessories, then games, and last would be consoles.  Consoles will always have a lower profit in comparison to the others (especially accessories) and good sales people are encouraged to bundle and sell as many accessories as they can as that will really increase the profitability of the store.   Stores care more about attach rate on accessories then they do with games or consoles.

Why do you think Radioshaft pushes all those accessories they have whenever they sell anything?  That is where the profit is. (generally a few 100% markup or greater.)

I stopped working there a month ago and keep in constant contact with the manager who is a friend of mine.............

Gamestop pays the cost of all Playstation systems, so obviously they arent buying the 399.99 system at 499.99 (you could just say 400 and 500 so not to mislead anyone). Obviously Accessories and Games are where the profit is, and guess which system has more than the other................if you said Wii you have won a free trip to common sense island!

Naz.. I would have kicked you out of the store before that point. When it comes to sales you sell what you have, not what you don't have and won't likely get many in. I'd also post up there at the store to ban you from ever entering the store again. They are there to make money and you don't know why that sales person was telling the person about the PS3 instead of the Wii.

Sure, the salesperson is being deceptive and only telling one side of the story, but when it comes to sales (especially if you are on commission) you push what you have. That's an ethics question they will have to answer themselves and deal with. Not by having someone playing games with no intent to purchase anything talk their customers out of a potential sale and try to give an ethics lesson to them.

If it were me and someone working at a store was doing their best to sell a person on a Wii instead of a PS3 that they were really looking for I'd just stand back, play the demo and laugh quietly everytime they said something bogus. And if they were lying about something that only the PS3 has and the Wii doesn't like a particular game. I may ask them when that game they lied about comes out for the PS3, or if they have any in stock. But I'd do it in another manner instead of getting into a heated debate with the sales monkey.

Shams, I do have to admit, that you should have mentioned to the lady about the 60gb version that does have bc for ps2 games. If the kid really wanted the PS3, what right do you have in trying to convince his parents that he should get the Wii? Now that kid may end up with a gift this Xmas that he doesn't want and could have had the system he really wanted instead.

Wow, you have either never worked in retail before or you worked in a store that needs to be shut down.  I was an employee in the games section of Best Buy for almost a year, and if I had done that I would have been fired instantly.  In fact, if I report this employee he will be fired instantly.  I know, because I've gotten 2 other Gamespot/EB Games employees fired for similar situations in the past.  You are never supposed to lie to the consumer.  EVER. That's the fastest path to unemployment.  I was hardly in a heated debate.  I simply answered the woman's questions the way the employee is paid to do.

naz, you did the right thing. I can see why the store clerk would be mad and throw you out but to actively decieve a customer is shady. there are criminal consequenes when companies intentionally mislead their consumers so a salesman should be held in no less regard.

I never worked for GS or EB or any of those game stores so I have no idea that they wouldn't pay commission.

Rachet and Clank is a pretty cool game for kids. And the 60gb i was refering to was the 60gb that Australia got which is where Shams lives not the one in the US. They should still have those available in the area as I would doubt they are sold out at this time everywhere. I'm not much into kids games nor do I even know what that kid likes to play when it comes to games. Maybe he's big into the Gran Turismo series? He won't get that on the Wii. I wouldn't ever step into any families conversation about what video game system they should buy their kid unless they asked me directly assuming that I know a thing or two about the game systems. Also, whether there are games out now that you want shouldn't push you to influence others into what to get. What if he wants R&C and other Sony exclusive first party games? Even if they aren't out until next year, it's what the kid wants.

jjseth we all get it already. You wouldn't have done it.

However, they did it without misinforming the customers, so kudos to them.

For the record, there were 2 other (more serious) times I dealt with this. One employee told every person who walked in and asked for "The new Nintendo system" that it was an Xbox 360.

The other time the guy told everyone who asked for a PSP that it had massive failure rate problems and you should buy a DS instead.

I don't tolerate people lying to the consumers, and since this was the first time I've ever caught this guy at it I won't report him, but people can and will be fired for doing that. You answer all consumer questions honestly so that they come back to the store.

I don't think you read my comments properly.

1/ I did mention that the PS3 DOES play PS2 games. They were obviously interested in the "silver" (cheap) one.

2/ I didn't do any convincing

3/ Again - it sounds like the Wii was already on order (not from yesterday) - and I have no idea what their real interest in the PS3 is. I suspect they were just checking it out, 'cos their kid was badgering them.

...

@naz - great story. People seem to have missed that the Wii *was* sold out. If it wasn't - the store clerk would have almost definitely have pushed that instead. You can't make sales/revenue from something you don't have in stock!

Well said jjseth. I was in the process or writing a similiar reply when I spotted yours.

@Naznatips, I agree that mentioning that the Wii was probably the one she was looking for was a good idea, but then what followed almost sounded like you were the one behind a counter, trying to sell her a Wii.

Edit: lol Naznatips your not just an internet mod. You keep a tight leash on store clerks too :)
